Leaky Diesel Injector

Post by Ian_Fearn »

I've got a very slightly leaky injector (the one closest the gearbox). It seems to be slowly getting slightly worse.

Is there a rubber type seal on the injector that could have deteriorated or is it likely to be something internal to the injector?

Cheers, Ian

There's a flame proof washer that sits between the injector and its hole in the cylinder head that sometimes gives rise to such leaks. I had one like it last year that manifested itself as bubbles from the injector base. All I had to do was nip the injector up slightly using the special injector socket.

If the washer's too far gone, then they're easily obtainable and simply replaced.

Or a 27mm open ended spanner! The special socket I believe has slots to clear the leak off pipes, but I must admit I've never found that I needed one. Perhaps I'm just a cowboy...

Any idea where to get replacement seals from? Is there an online source?

Before you go changing the fire washer, replace the leak back blank end.

They tend to get loose in time, weep and diesel runs down the injector into the bottom recess.

Actually there are two sealing washers. One is a bit like a spark plug washer and this is one that can leak out onto the head if the injector is not really tight. The flame check washer is an internal seal and will not cause an external leak unless you have two fitted by mistake preventing the injector from fully seating.
But check the leak hoses as Brian suggests and the diesel union for leakage as well.

Looks like the fuel is leaking from further up the injector on closer inspection so its likely these pipes are leaking.

Theres 2 types of leak-off pipe kits I can get from the motor factor. Do you know if its 3.2 or 3.4mm?? Does it matter?

i have never been offerd two diferent size's before, but i would go for the 3.2mm as it will stretch a bit and it will be nice and tight

Are you sure i's not leaking out of the body of the injector where it all screws together??
Not unheard of..

Tis difficult to tell but it is wet round the leak off pipes.

What would the repair be for leakage from the injector body?

swp it out for a known good injector probably. Either that or you need to take it to a diesel injector specialist i imagine.
