Who turned out the (dashboard) lights

Ok, the BX has been pretty much behaving itself recently but one small problem has manifest itself in the dashboard lights often not switching on. Sometimes they come on a few minutes after the car starts with a little relay "tick" but more and more often they just don't come on at all.

New relay needed?

Possibly, have you checked out the dimmer mounted under the steering shroud? These have been known to fail.

I would, but there is not one there X) just the little hole it goes in. I think it has either been bypassed long ago or just never had one.

Take a look inside the shroud then, there should be 2 wires connected together, apparently doing nothing else.

I found a rheostat in there, cable tied to the steering column and set to max. Turning the dial revealed the solution to the problem; the rheostat was dodgy, the lights going off for every 1mm of turning it, and recently had been dislodged such that it was leaving an open circuit. Luckily I had a new rheostat from RXBX from when I ordered somethng or other related and the only electrical problem I have had with my BX is now sorted
