diodes

Post by Toddman »

Just out of interest the lines that look darker than the rest coming from the diode symbols - are they for labelling or are they actaually part of the diode symbol?
If they are part of the symbol then it looks to me as if the diodes are Schottky Diodes, can't remember much about them other than they act as a normal diode upto a point then suffer "avalanche" breakdown.
Must admit I don't remember much about whay I am supposed to :D

Cheers
Luke

Thanks but there is no need, Sleepy. I'm an electronics engineer, which is why Bernie asked me in the first place. I have plenty of them myself.
Luke: the Schottky diode would not drop as many volts and while it is suitable for this application, it has a different symbol. That shown looks a little like a thyristor; but it isn't. My worry with all of this is that if the diode goes, the driver transisitor may go too but this has not happened on Bernie's car.

The thick black lines are for labelling
The diode on the right is the original diode that has gone faulty and the one on the left is the new replacement.

The actual part is from my Xantia which has got hydractive2 suspension.
There are 2 of these, one front and one rear.
They are controlled by the HA2 ECU and control the valve that operates the HA block to allow the third sphere to enter the circuit.

I bought 10 of each of 5408, 4148 and 4409 to try.

What's the difference between them?

4148 is a small signal device and will probably have died due to the back emf spike's current.
5408 is a 3A 1000V rectifier, tough but a little slow.
4409 I don't know but in this application, I'd stick with the
1N4004 which I know to be suitable.
