Thanks for everyone's input esp Electrokid for volunteering to swingby!
I was busy with family things & didn't see your post till afterwards!

Let me have a go removing & replacing brushes as you suggest if I get stuck I'll be back to scream!

No probs Panny - up to my eyes this week but maybe a bit more time next.
Next time it won't start when hot try pouring some cold water over the solenoid on top of the starter motor.
