There's some information on the Saab 99 GL Petro project on pages 9-12 (=48-51), unfortunately only in Finnish. A figure is included showing all the required modifications to the original petrol version. The picture on page 12 (=51) shows the extra filler cap next to the registration plate.

The text says that the original reason for the project was the oil crisis, and the car was initially meant to run on terpentine, a by-product from the domestic forest industry. Later on, when the oil crisis went over and supply of oil was not at risk anymore, the focus shifted from terpentine to kerosene, which is more or less a similar fuel.

I don't know if any texts about this project exist in English.

BTW, names of the fuels in different languages can be quite confusing. If I understand correctly, what is called "bensiini" in Finnish, is "petrol" in (UK) English, and what is "petroli" in Finnish is "kerosene" in (US) English (but "paraffin" in UK English?)..

Heh, that would be "nestekaasu" = "liquid gas" in Finnish - whereas the same words in the opposite order "kaasuneste" means "Hydropneumatic", which conveniently takes us back to BX:s..

Different here in France too, and sometimes causes confusion with visitors...
Petrole (often available from the pump at fuel stations) = UK paraffin, US kerosene. If you want petrol, you need to look for Essence.
Fioul = UK red diesel (used here for central heating as well as agricultural use). If you wanted to ask for 'fuel' as a generic term, the word is Carburant.
And you may have a diesel engine (same word) but it doesn't run on Diesel, it runs on Gasoil.
At least GPL is just an anagram of LPG, so that shouldn't cause anyone any problems!
