Good point that, if you'd had that blow out in a non hdyro car you'd be eating ditch or worse. Interestingly saw a video showing that a rear wheel blow out is much much worse than a front tyre blow out.

I've got some old michelin xt1/2's?? on my tzd turbo, needless to say last time i had a look they were cracked, so i won't be driving the car on those under any circumstance......

Yes your quite right Mathew, that's because front wheel blow outs can be controlled and corrected with the steering whereas rear wheel blow outs can't. It is for this reason that new tyres with better grip should always be put on the back and not on the front contrary to what most people appear to think.

Kevan, i don't think the reason for putting new tyres on the rear has got much to do with blowouts, its more to do with safe handling, it's much better to have nice safe understeer than oversteer, hence you should always fit new tyres on the rear.

99% of people you say this to don't have a clue & don't believe you, so i never bother labouring the point with them & just advise them to do some research. They'll still not bother to swap them round as they don't think it'll be a problem & give some rubbishy excuse like, "i drive slowly". HMMMM, i thought 70mph is 70mph, but never mind, less road users due to accidents helps with congestion.....

yes that's what i meant, the reasons blow outs are worse on the back are the same reason you should put new tyres on the back, lack of control, not to avoid blow outs.
I know what I mean even if I can't explain it

I've had two MXLs blow out like that in the past - one in about 1999 and one a year or so back, and both were shortly (days or weeks) after identifiable heavy hits on sharp-edged potholes. Both were also announced in advance by a vibration whichI initially put down to a grumbling CV joint.
FWIW I've got a set of five MXLs on one of the TZDs at the moment, fitted as new old stock fairly recently. I've also got another set waiting (in the dark) for the other TZD. I thought they were available more recently than 94 - they were used as spares on Berlingos etc. I'll check the date codes, but I'm more interested in the actual condition. I'm reluctant to give up on them, not least because the ride quality (and the grip) is so much better than the later 'Energy' (MXT?) version.

Maybe the MXL's were available later than '94. Just trying to think back to when mum's TGD needed it's first pair of tyres. Sure it can't have been any later than '95 cos it had 20k on the clock when we bought it at 2 years old in '93. Whenever it was, the garage told us it was impossible to obtain MXL's any more. Of course, they may have been lying!

When the 2CV suffered a blow out, I only realised because there was a peculiar noise from the rear! I was towing a (very small) caravan at the time too!

KevR, i think the trouble with tyres is that even by checking the condition & they appear to be new, age does weaken them which you'll only find out when/if a tyre goes bang.

I personally wouldn't take the risk, & at the very least i'd take them to a tyre specialist to get their advice to see what they think. Not sure if there is any test that can be done on old tyres to see if they are structurlarly sound or not? I'm sure i read somewhere that tyres more than 5 years old are a risk?

Glad you're ok djm.
Check the others - after the DOT marking there should be a 3 digit code (made in the 80s), 3 digit code plus triangle (90s) or 4 digit code (after 2000).
Didn't know that - useful info Mat - must go and check the Granny.

Last year I threw out the spare wheel from the TGD - looked as though it had never been used - tyre looked old and the wheel had rust at the seams between the two halves - not worth the risk.

I should have said - the first two numbers give the week, and the remaining one(s) give the year.

Took me a while to catch on this thread from a fellow New Zealander.

First thing I noticed was the amount of damge for a 100kph blow out :?: My thinking is that the tyre was already deflating and the final disintingration was caused by our famous kiwi corners and a bit of extended driving after flat.

Now on to the other points!

Yes UV light in NZ is stronger than up north so probably had a factor to play but the age of the tyres and how they were stored would also have much to play in things. Wisdom over here for our Fire Trucks is to replace the fronts every 5 years and the rears every 10 years. These tyres being practically new end up on longhaul trucks to be chewed up in a matter of weeks.

Tyre wear!!! All front wheel drive cars tend to wear the fronts out faster than the rears. The BX no exception of the set I have on now the Fronts are down to 3mm the Rears 6mm after 22,000kms Firehawk TZ100.

Sitting on the TRS (aka spares car) are Michelin certis (not sure if thats a make?) 3mm Tread no idea of the mileage they have done but they are date stamped 2002. Amazing tyres really!

If they got damage to the sidewalls then they are going to cause you grief sometime of you may get lucky! Especially trying to do highspeed cornering and the correct tyre pressures are essential.

Oh btw those Firehawks I got on my TZS are Nitrogen inflated...yea yea flame on....Only thing positive got to say Nitrogen is its ability to maintain tyre pressures as to the claims of better fuel consumption and tyre wear???? I still have a lot convincing on that part. At the time the Tyres were the cheapest touring quality available.

No disputing that older tyres not stored correctly and exposed to salt etc are more prone to failure. Luckily in NZ salt exposure on the roads is none existant!

yeah was preety scary, i got the tyres on a 1992 TZD i bought, that was a one owner car so i dont know where the tyres came from the only thing was i wanted to run them to wear them out. i will only use them as spares now.
other than that the tyres have been great, but it is not worth ripping my car to bits to wear them out.
the worst bit was my brother had borrowed my wheel brace a week before and had not put it back in my car so i had to drive on a flat for about 30km. that was why it was so badly ripped in the end.
also trying to brake and lock up the wheels so it would rip the rest of the broken tyre off.

ah well tis only a tyre. so yes to all you people out there, only run these things in an absolute emergency, and dont go any harder than 80kph. treat them like a space saver.

the tyres did not show any signs of cracking and looked reasonable. loads of tread and no bulges. it was about 3 seconds before it went that it made a lumping noise then boom.

I have had a blow out on the back of a cx and have had no hassle in control of the vehicle. seems these cars are built for tougher stuff than you can ever think.

thats why they drive so well when they have 4 wheels.

UV is a real killer here, so yes i can see the point. i will be getting new tyres for the restoration project.

Yeah, i think thats the best thing to use old tyres for, as a space saver tyre, so keep the speed low & it should get you home hopefully, but not have them fitted all round. Infact today Shaune looked at the MXL spare on mine, it does look brand spanking new, the steel wheel is nicely rusted, so i'd never trust it in a million years. As a spare yes & at a lower speed to get back home only & then i'd get it replaced asap.

I've also got some of that tyre foam sealent stuff, just as a backup incase of issues with the spare.
