LHM tank Y piece

Post by mat_fenwick »

Oh no, not again I hear you saying!

But I wasn't going to ask what the part number is or if anyone wants one

It was just that mine has split, and I phoned up our local dealer for a price and availability. He quoted £4.62 and has 5 in stock, so if anyone else is after one then please let me know before Friday. I didn't ask whether that included VAT, so best to assume it doesn't.

Change of colour?

Post by Defender110 »

Do you fancy a change of colour, cheaper too! I'm assuming they are the same?

Even cheaper! But what I didn't know until your link was the internal dimensions as it was listed as a vacuum T piece. I wonder whether the orange ones are made of a more heat resistance plastic? (As it does seem to be a common failing, and the Xantia tanks are closer to the engine).

i think the use of a Y piece there is no good as it angles the two pipes upwards towards the bonnet,

a T piece is far better, you can buy little plastic ones for coupling windscreen washer pipes,

then conect it up with three short lengths of rubber pipe,

LHM Tank Y Piece.

Post by bx petrol auto saloon »

Dear Matt.
Nice to talk to you Matt finally, It is very kind of you to ask about these
Y pieces, Is this the same one that sits on top of the LHM tank lid ? if so I
would like to take one if I may, as mine split last week.
Many thanks indeed Matt.

Agreed, they certainly weren't designed for under the BX bonnet.

I believe "Y" was chosen over a "T" in order to stop the return (leak-off) LHM from travelling into the vent pipe.

aaah so there was a method in there madness after all,

i have never heard it explained that way before,

i spoz the answer to that is drill a hole in the bonnet to stick the vent tube up through

:) I know it's a bit over engineered but I've made them out of 5 mill stainless pipe welded together.

I ended up buying one from citroen (they only come in packs of two though, so i have a spare for a fiver if anyone wants one).

trouble is.. the internal diameter's too small! so either my plastic pipes are too thick (can't see why) or citroen have f'ed up...

Hmmm, that's strange, as when my wife went in to collect a couple on Friday, they'd already made out the receipt for one, and had to change it as I'd asked her to get two!

It was quite a squeeze to get it over the pipes, but hot water helped. If you still can't get them on I suppose you could open it out with a drill.

Boiling water was the tip that was recommended to me, it should soften it up enough to squeeze on.

I've connected the return direct to the LHM tank via a short straight rubber section. The vent is no longer connected, just sits there with a tie wrap. Not having a vent does not seem to give any problems, or maybe the tank vents round the rubber bung.
