One the 4 bxs of mine ive done ive always painted the underbody and wheelarches (after a ful de-grease and clean) firstly with 2 coats of hammerite smooth metal paint (black) then put 2 coats of hammerite car underbody seal with added waxoly on top this is because the underbody seal stays tacky and can chip with stones flying up under the car and (mostly wheel arches) the smooth hammerite metal paint drys hard and just gives it that extra bit of protection under the underbody seal. I only use waxoyl (runny stuff) for box sections, hard to reach areas,suspension pipes and brake lines.

Hi,

unfortunatly i dont have the use of a garage (due to my red bx 16v living in there) so i have to do the work on my driveway. First things first was to get a plastic sheet under the car protecting the drive from the areas to be painted. Then the car is put on axel stands and stripdown can commence!. I started on the back first so i took the bumper/rear lights/spare wheel/wheel rack and both the metal plates off that go behind the rear wheels. then i dropped the rear section of the exhaust and took off (plenty of room to work in then) I bought a big tin of the 'GUNK' de-greaser and poured some into a bowl then using a thick paintbrush leatherd it on all over the underside then left it for 10 minutes to penetrate. I then wipe off with a cloth leaving the underside clean. i then leave to dry overnight then apply the first coat off hammerite and then the second coat of hammerite paint 10 mins later. Its then left to dty overnight followed by the first coat of underbody seal left to dry then coated again. Its a time consuming process and you need your car off the road for a week if doing it properly. I start at the back and work my way to the front taking bumpers off,lights front and rear,front wings/splashguards out,i even dropped the de-aireation tank in the rear wheel arch to underseal it properly. I always do the suspension/brake pipes last in clear wax oyl and then inject it in to all the box sections and everywhere there is a rubber bung to take out. The thing is with my cars ive done everything and i mean everything right down to painting the suspension arms, fuel pump heat sheild, spare wheel and wheel bracket, rear plates behind rear wheels, antiroll bars and crossmember!!!! the bx16v club can vouch for this as they saw my handywork at last years french car show!

forgot to mention that all bolts are cleaned and re-greased befor being re-fitted

Nice attention to details there Rob, I trend towards the greasy bits myself but as I look towards preserving my BX then your stuff looks good.
