BX Gearbox

Post by Tim Leech »

Ken has mentiond that the idler gear in my 19TZD gearbox is rather noisy and is probably on the way out, so I need to keep an eye out for a replacement box between now and the CCC 2012. A TD one would be good to give it more relaxed crusing.

So if anyone has a good used one please get in touch.

A TD box *might* be a bit too long legged for an NA to pull mate
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Thought that, th 19TZD does go very well indeed, just thinking about the CCC a longer 5th would be useful, if a 1.9D box shows up that would be fine!

On the subject of gearing, if you want to experiment it's not hard (or so I'm told) to swap the appropriate bits from a TD or GTi box to give yourself a longer 5th gear. Haven't done it myself but knew a guy who used to prepare Peugeot rally cars, which use the same box, and he used the shortest possible gearing for the four bottom gears, and the longest possible for fifth to keep the revs down on transition sections. It can apparently be done with the gearbox in situ.

Yes 5th gear can be replaced very easily by taking the end cap of the gearbox without removing the gearbox. (well you could in the Pug Partner vans) Sudden lack of drive in 5th is the splines gone in the middle of the sprocket.

It's something I did on my MK1, yes you get more MPG but it didn't like hills.
But the engine in Tim's TZD goes really well. I think it will be fine when paired up with a TD gearbox.

Someone must have one :? :(

Quick query. When did the gearbox change? My Mk1 has reverse next to first. I've got bugger all synchromesh on first (which isn't that much of a problem apart from when I forget!) so at some point, a box swap is probably on the cards. Lots to do before then mind!

What are the symptons of the gearbox issue? If its just when changing down from 5th to 4th, just double de-clutch rather than the hassle & expense of changing the gearbox? If its changing up, then i guess it's buggered
