Seat Ibiza's probably a good call. Rover 200s are cheaper than 25s. The diesel is actually really very good, and I doubt that many have been driven by under 25s which may help the insurance situation. If it's anything like the Peugeot 306 DTurbo, I always found that ridiculously cheap to insure compared to petrol engined equivalents.

Of course, I've just taken a Peugeot 309 1.3GL in part ex for my Rover 75. Could be an ideal motor, but sadly also suffers form the logistical problem of Mat's 106 in being in a better country.

quite a lot, I think that it is insurance group 26 or something ridiculous like that.

I insured my son in the summer on my 1.6 BX, 21 years old, passed his test 2 years previously, did it with Elephant one of those 10 months for 12 deals, on his own policy. I think it was £1177 with 1 years' NCD and his aunt as named driver (that also saved about another £500, but had to register the car in his name at her address, and he did stay there quite often over the summer hols).

so I would think maybe about £2500 for your daughter

Funny what you find when you're crawling around eBay looking at cheap, relatively local cars.

One owner and full Skoda service history, 12 month's MOT and cheap to insure... Don't think it's a teenage girl's dream though!

Skoda Favorits are great - and have suddenly become rare! My wife would rather be seen in a Favorit than anything modern. I understand not all women are the same though...

I find myself strangely attracted to the Favorit, maybe it's all the BXesque straight lines ?

Anyway, my insurance investigations reveal:

(All fully comp in my daughter's name with me and the missus as named drivers. £200 voluntary excess, parked on the road outside our house).

Citroen AX 1.1L Salsa £914.17
Peugeot 106 1.2 Aztec £947.03
Ford KA 1.3 £972.47
Skoda Favorit 1.3 £1,083.77
Renault Clio 1.2L (97/98 ) £1,091.19
Nissan Micra 1.0L, or Ford Fiesta 1.25LX £1,118.75
Seat Ibiza 1.4L £1,149.49

A Citroen ZX 1.4 comes in at £1,563.95
and that BX Meteor 1.6 would be £1,566 (highest price for the BX was £14,323.54   )

Did you try TPF&T? For the value of the vehicles you're looking at, you might be able to buy a replacement with the money saved on insurance! It's not always cheaper though, as it seems not all companies offer it as a choice so you're limiting your options slightly.

I'd always go fully comp to be honest. TPF&T can give quotes that are even higher.

Phil - have you tried the Rover 200 diesel/Pug 306 diesel? Or smaller/diesel engined BXs?

For the AX TPF&T came out at £30 dearer, or even more in the case of the Ka, Ibiza and Fiesta.

F/C is the way forward. I will try Rovers and small diesels.

I must say that when I was looking for first car quotes, the cost went up directly with the size/insurance group. I didn't find any bargains just because they weren't typical boy racer cars (unfortunately). When I was looking, diesels tended to be more expensive, perhaps as I was comparing a 1.1 Fiesta with the 1.6 diesel model. Still, this was 15 years ago now so things will probably have changed!

EDIT - That is strange regarding TPF&T - I had noticed that for me nowadays the premiums are almost the same (but fully comp. still maybe £20 more) but just put that down to me being older and (apparently!) more sensible. Back when I was 18, several places refused fully comp. and the ones that did were at least double the premium. Wonder why the change? (Not that I want to turn this into another insurance thread!)

Well, Mat it will become a bit of an insurance thread - but only because the system means I can hunt down a cheap, reliable small and eco-friendly little 1.1 hatchback, for instance and it'll cost nearly three times to insure as to buy. So it's actually less about finding the right car, more about finding the lowest insurance.

Mind you, it could go horribly wrong:
Found a car that's cheapest to insure at £806.... but it's a Seat Marbella vom=

How about these then:
Renault 5 Campus (1.2) £1,027.59
Ford Fiesta 1.1 LX £1,155.85
Rover 25 1.4 £1,298.95
Rover 200 1.4 £1,391.17 (why more expensive than a 25?)
Peugeot 306 TD £1,399.65
Rover Metro 114 £1,518.37

And, getting silly: a 1994 Nissan Sunny £1,600
1991 Honda Civic £1,764

But someone mentioned a Dyane.
£865.41. Result :) (Except a. She wouldn't drive it and b. finding a good one under a couple of grand is hard).

Hard but not impossible Phil. Dyanes costing over £2k are still a rarity rather than the norm. A mate just sold one for about £700. Did need some work, but then show me a car that doesn't!

I can guarantee that a Seat Marbella would be within your budget. I think they're quite funky...

I hate to break this to you Ian, but your (and my!) ideas of what represents good taste are likely to be somewhat different to those of a teenage girl...

Philip, are all those quotes low because she's a girl ?

i.e. is this "sex discrimination" thing not yet in force ?

 those quotes surpirse me for how low they are

as for TPFT, my Honda Accord 2.4 i-VTEC is TPFT, has been for a year, it was cheaper than FC, it's up for renewal next week at only £330 (it's parked on my drive up by my house, not on a road, so no drunk driver is going to run into it at night)
