Or i can supply & fit a nice K&N direct panel replacement filter for £20 instead, which means you never need to replace the filter evah

Never thought about it before but I have to agree: That air filter is far from clogged and is still doing the same job as when it was fitted new and new cars now have an indicator on to say when they are blocked so they are not changed too soon to maximise use and remain 'green' . Oil filters have gone back to changeable cartridge type for the same reason, recyclable / minimum wastage.

Matthew: have you checked the micron filtration of the K&N filter? does it meet the original filtration standards?

Erm no, i haven't checked the micron filtration, but i bet its better than a paper filter due to the construction & the oil used on the filter.

I've also never heard of an engine failure regarding any type of filter inc k&n. I've heard of idiots running their cars without any type of filter, again never seen any mention of ruining an engine (it should cause extra wear & tear), but unless you got a lot of ingress of say stones or sand, normal dust/muck i bet would just get obliterated by an engine anyway? I'll stand corrected if anyone knows more on the subject.

Not had any issues with my filter, infact its easy to keep clean & appears to have made the car more responsive & has saved me money on replacing with paper filters.

I know you like to keep your cars standard Kevan & there's nothing wrong with that, perhaps you are sceptical or not trusting of anything else? To my mind, paper on the face of it doesn't seem to be all that brilliant, its a very low technology piece of kit that does a job, but how well does it actually do?

K&N do have a warranty & surely as millions of them have been sold all over the world, if there was a problem with them, car internet forums would be awash with stories of damaged engines & would be blaming companies like k&n? The only negatives i've heard are that peoples expecations of the extra performance have been higher than what they actually deliver. I didn't fit one to my TXD, i did it from an environmental point of view, one filter for the life of the car, rather than loads of paper one's :D But any extra bhp always comes in handy if you've only got 71 to begin with

No I just ask the question out of a total lack of knowledge of them, the couple I have seen appear to have quite a rough grade filter material as if aimed at short term/track performance rather than longevity. I also didn't know they were an oil soaked filtration system.

What if your engine is prone to heavy oil staining, or if you live in a particularly dusty area? Are the K&Ns supposed to be washable? Surely any filter, regardless of construction, if working properly will clog over time.

K&N style filters are designed to be washed and re-oiled to preserve efficiency.

We have a cone-type filter on the Red Baron, which has made a noticeable difference to the performance.

Interesting - that'll be something I'll be looking into then if anybody else has one on a carby-type. Looks like it improves engine accessibility, too. Something that has always puzzled me, however, what are those big plastic boxes on the non-intercooled diesels?

What Phil's said, they can be cleaned with water & a cleaning solution that K&N also produce & then re-oiled with the correct k&n red coloured oil, they look like new again :D

I usually just hoover my filter to remove the dead flies, leaves & other muck that builds up in them & have yet to actually wet clean the one in my txd. They supposedly only need cleaning after 50k, i'll probably do mine well before then as i'd prefer to have a cleaner one in the car.

I bought a 2nd hand one last year & my gawd was it filthy, no idea how long it had been fitted in the car, so i was a bit sceptical as to how clean i could get it, but once cleaned it came up like brand new :D

There are other companies out there such as pipercross & green etc...but k&n seem to be the most common one's, thats why i went for those & they were slightly cheaper as well. Couldn't tell you which one's are best, but anything is better than a paper one.

Kevan, sorry mate, didn't realise you didn't know anything about them. If you like, i'll lend you one to see whether you notice any difference or not? Paul296 swears that that his Hurricane is quicker through the gears than before, i make no promises though  Just long term saving money is why i have one & they are easy to maintain as per my description above.

got one in my golf GTi ( panel type not the induction cone kit ) and had one in the trajet until the dozy garage changed it and threw the K+N in the bin, had one on the camry as well,
there is an increase in performance which is marginal but its the long term thing of not having to change it that appeals most to me

Thanks for the offer Matthew but I still currently have 1/2 a dozen or more paper elements in my stock that I keep in case supplies dwindle. I'm too am not bothered about performance increase but the K&N sounds like it could be a good alternative if the supply of ordinary filters does dry up or become overly exspensive.

Here's BX in the snow about an hour ago, now it's stopped:

Image

Not a great photo, but oh well, new wheels visible at least. Had a fun evening in the snow too:

That lorry was stuck for about an hour, with as many as 15 people trying to push it at any one time. Got kind of tired of the smell of burning rubber after a while - although the European driver kept in good spirits even after being told he'd have to go back down the hill again as his intended route to the Cadbury factory had even steeper gradients. Buses seem to cope okay - although just after that photo was taken, the driver quite literally drifted around the roundabout - amazing! Usual BMWs and Mercedes getting stuck, FWD drive vans rocketing around, weirdly older cars seem to fare better (less power? Lighter?). People far more grateful for a push than last year, except for the one man who thanked us by shouting "white ****s" whilst on the phone out of the window. Eventually the council gritter came and I got bored.

Blimey. Are you in Bournville then or near? Wonder if the buses are on winter tyres? The minibuses I drive around here are so equipped, and have proved very capable. Typically, we've had barely any snow all winter, including now!

The buses seemed to be doing far better than cars generally, so it's possible. Yeah just down the road from Bournville, that place smells so nice! This was on a new bypass near the hospital where all the soldiers go - all the ambulances thought ahead and had snow socks, and they really did work.
