Rear arm Bearings

Post by OwenS »

I think the rear arm bearings are giving up on my car. The rear offside wheel is starting to lean inwards and that wheel inparticular emits a 'crack' noise when turning sharply. Do I need to replace both sides or just the one? Is this an easy job and when do I get the arm bearings from and how expensive will this be?

See the BX DIY part of the club website, there is a full write up.

When the hurricane needed them the car wandered quite badly at high speeds although a cracking noise and the leaning on the wheels is the normal symptoms.

I thought you'd sold this car now?

Unforntuatly I had to pull out as sale of my other car fell through. This would have left me with only £300 to get something else..which would mean buying rubbish.

I've had a butchers at GSF parts. Which parts do I need to buy? Just the arm bearings? Do I need to do both sides?

I counsel that it's worth doing both at once. My o/s bearing was pretty bad - the car wandered at speed and there was a crack when I got in the car in the morning. The bearing was dry and collapsed. My mechanic thought the other side was ok - but I asked him to do it anyway. In fact when he got the bearing out, it was *just* starting to go, so it was a good job!

The bearing kits are available from SKF. I paid £100 per side plus vat to get mine done.

Good luck!

Mark.
