Trip jammed

Post by Gareth Wales »

The trip-mileage-counter, or whatever its called, has stopped working although the main odometer figure and spped indicater continues bravely on.
Never had this happen before - any hope of a cure? I'm, pessimistic because the speedo appears to be a very very sealed unit. :(

I'm not sure if its sealed or not - speedos may come apart by removing the screws in the face and lifting out of the case.

It may be the re-setting mechanism that has jammed - and a good fiddle. push etc may work wonders.

I've had a couple of these stick on other cars and have used a fgew tricks to get 'em moving. Usually pushing in and allowing it to "ping" out will do the trick or in one case, I reversed the car whilst pinging it and it let go.
Fiddle seems to be the operative word.

Common fault perhaps as one of my old BX`s did it quite regulary. It used to work again after some fiddling but eventually packed up altogether when I got annoyed with it one morning and srated banging it a bit too hard

Non-operating or non-resetting tripmeters can sometimes be due to a problem with the fairly brittle plastic fork that is attached to the reset button. I've replaced at least one of these before now: they can easily break.

It is quite possible to take the speedo assembly apart, but I'd strongly recommend dismantling one off-car first before trying it on your pride and joy (somewhat fiddly).
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

I had a sticking milometer in my old 19TXD (now stewarts) after much swaering and repeatadly pushing the button it freed itself and then worked fine. What really annoyed me was the ticking sound it made when it was stuck, just like one of those annoying squeaks you can never find!

The red BX now with Marty and the new TZD both have this problem  The only cure seems to be stripping out the clocks for a fiddle

My XM has this problem also, perhaps we should start a new thread.

Who doesn't have this problem.
They think it's all over, it is now!

Mine has been sticking so that you cannot reset the trip without stabbing at the button wildly but at least it is still clocking up the miles.

You could try pulling the black reset rod outwards into the normal position or even past this. The reset is just a simple mechanical operation. The odometer and trip meter are fully dismantleable and the mileage can even be reset easily.

After much pinging, tapping, twisting and pulling, (not to mention a near miss with a sheep while this was going on) my trip meter zeroed with a scrunch when I tried re-setting at exactly 60 miles - ie 0600. On the return journey, I successfully zeroed again at 60 miles. I just don't know enough or indeed anything about the workings to hazard a guess on why this has worked twice. Could it be that previous owners have regularly recorded shorter trips and that the relevant cogs, say within a 50 mile band, have worn? Or is it just a fluke I happened upon. One things for sure, I won't be using the trip meter again. Just couldn't stand the suspense.
Ang guys - very many thanks for contributions to this pleasantly eccentric thread.
