Maybe they weren't charging enough?
saintjamesy89 wrote:Will a LHM flush and caliper bleed sort out a slightly seized caliper? Or perhaps a good run on the road sort it out?
LHM flush won't, and unlikely to get better on the road. Not a difficult job assuming just the sliders need cleaning/greasing. EDIT - piston WON'T push back - I first found out this as a teenager working on my Dad's car. Piston needs to rotate to move back. But take off the pads and see if the caliper slides easily first.

Why? Is it worry about failure, or just that you want more shiny bits under the bonnet? (Which I can understand!)

Yep, just want shiny new bits! And so I can say the whole ignition system is new :)

Slider check and re-grease on the menu then! Will see if I can do it this week. Along with the handbrake.

Tom whilst you are in fettling mode, why not drop the spare wheel and remove the wheel carrier. Very satisfying job to remove rust from said carrier and wheel. I used a rotary wire brush and a drill to clean up mine. Then respay the carrier and wheel with some stone chip paint. Whist these are off the car give the rear underside a good coating of waxoyl and WD40. Great way to spend an afternoon and fairly cheap as well. De-rusting can be a trifle tedious so bring a potable music system and some tunes. 8)

You read my mind Mark! I intended to do that when I have the rear wheels off for tyre fitting (will check rear brakes at that point too).

Things look like things will have to be delayed somewhat. Wednesday will be being spent starting packing the house up, Thursday I may have to go to uni for an interview with the external examination board (if my grades fall on a boundary) which is a bit scary! Friday I definitely have to go to uni to get said results (and marked dissertation), Saturday we are actually moving and Sunday i'm working whilst Steve is unpacking our stuff hehe. Ugh, lots going on again.

No viva! Hooray, did have to have one for my dissertation but that was fine as I get on very well with our 3rd year lecturers (especially in the pub :) ).

In other news (hehe) I had a bash at the drivers side brakes today, got not very far at all - bloody brake pad retaining slider thingy at the top of the pads is rusted solid onto the caliper. I have lost my hammer, and I really needed a wee and it was raining so I gave up. Must find the hammer, then I can give it a good smack and hopefully get it off. Sprayed liberal amounts of WD40 on it and will have another bash, erm, next week? Don't know when, getting results at uni tomorrow, moving Saturday and working Sunday... Woe is me, no GT time for ages.

Those sliders can be a pain. I've sometimes managed to get a screwdriver in on the fair end so you can lever against that handy bolt head but they can be very sticky. I've got a spare caliper with a seized slider thing in it and nothing will move it - not even big hammers!

I've got an old pair of long nosed pliers of which one arm will fit snugly in the hole. You can then tap the slider out with a hammer. But without a hammer you're stuffed!

Lol I did have two hammers, one gert biggun covered in rust and dents :D and a smaller one better for clawing work.

There's nothing like the impatience you seem to acquire when you really really need a wee and something isn't going right, like a late train, or someone taking really long in a loo, or stupid slider pad-retainers being rusted solid to the caliper and not moving!!

I usually have a large water bottle in the boot for drinking purposes, which would have done but the astra has been used as a van recently to shift stuff to the tip or to our new house, that's probably where the bloody hammers have slinked off to, some unknown place during packing.
