Hey, congrats Willy, I got my results on Friday but was a steady 2:1 all throughout the 3 years, I agree on the applying yourself bit only problem is i'm a little bit too lazy!
I'm not a Saint, or a James, but a Tom Saint-James!

Nice one Willy (and Tom)! It's a great feeling when all Uni work is behind you. Make the most of this summer...

I got a strange mix of results through my course, ranging from a 3rd to a 1st but ended up with a 2:1. Concentration was my issue too, as if a subject didn't interest me I'd just switch off and daydream.

A much belated and pointless post but it turns out that all that was needed for the epic fuel starvation problem was a new fuel pump :s so there's £15 well spent anyway :)

Also they don't make them like they used to... didn't pull the handbrake hard enough in the work car park and to lots of embarrassment it rolled into some young intern's brand new Fiesta. Golf ball sized dent on the fez and some scratches (fortunately she said it's not a new bumper job), couldn't find a single mark on mine - I think I was framed!

Bx's are known to roll even when the handbrake is on, something to do with it being on the front wheels and cooling metal retracts just enough, happened to me more than once!! Well done on rhe result though!!

poppycock; Only if your cables are foobarred, the fact they are a disc brake handbrake actually makes them a lot more efficient than cars with drum brake handbrakes.

I'm not so sure - agreed that disc brakes generally give better stopping ability. But the theory goes that with hot discs, you apply the handbrake and as the disc cools it shrinks away from the pads, reducing holding force. If a hot drum cools it actually shrinks onto the shoes and increases the holding force.
That's the theory, but I've only experienced it when I've had a sticky caliper, and hence a disc has been hotter than usual. However, if I've been driving hard I will tend to leave it in gear if on a slope, so as not to put the theory to the test!

Sorry Kevan, agree to disagree again on this one, having had BX's since 85, Ive seen (I watched it happen) my Dads 87 19RD (which was quite new) roll down our drive onto the garage door (making quite a dent to it) and my 90 16TZS disappear down the road outside my mates house after being parked for an hour or so, so much so now that unless the ground is flat I put in gear.

Early Xantias were known for the same issue, our 94M had a recall not long after we got it (new) for a change in the handbrake cables after a then newly launched Xantia rolled away and came to rest on a telegraph pole, and made the headlines!!

I bow to your greater experience my friend. I know the newest fad with the Land Rover brigade is to replace the transmission mounted drum hand brake with a disc brake but this is a dedicated hand brake so doesn't get hot in use.

Its probably as much down to how hard you pull the brake on and what journey the car did prior to being parked and how hot the discs/pads get.

I always depress the button when I applicate the handbrake as I dont like the noise it makes.

Have you ever known the standard drum cause problems? I've always found it to be staggeringly effective, even when holding a 3+ ton trailer.

I was going to say why on earth would you change the landrover handbrake given that its a staionary use item and the contact surface with a drum is far more than a disk. The only thing I dont like about Landrover handbrakes is that there is no redundancy its one cable park 2.5 tonnes with a trailer on a hill theres only 1 bit of steel string holding it there.

I ALWAYS leave any vehicle I own in gear, having had a 2CV roll off a driveway - my first Citroen! I never trust a handbrake.

Oo on the topic a friend of mine said that holding the brakes on (or in this case handbrake) after some lively driving can warp the discs due to uneven cooling of the rotors? Sounds like it should be science, but I'm not totally convinced, although I did frazzle/warp some discs in the Black Mountains last year

I have wondered about that myself. No idea about the science behind it, but it sort of makes sense. There are some super-scientists on this forum, what say you? ;)
