Dropped it off at the garage on Thursday to have some bits done. I was happy to see they had my courtesy car ready and waiting.

The bits that need doing are as follows - ball joint (the horrible clunk), two calipers (I knew they were shagged), rear wheel bearing (the humming from the back) and while they're at it rear discs and pads, which are probably as old as the car.

DS 23 EFi Automatique in 'Brun Scarabee' (I think?) AND it's got one of those funky blinds in the back 8) - Perfect! Can't you just nick it? I'm sure no one would notice; it's not a if it's a new one!?

Think that was the one that was at Wetherby (Geoff someone?). If so I saw it first, mine.

That's nice. I don't have 5 grand Image

Hope your BX is back in business after that little lot of repairs!

I remember that D at Wetherby - very nice, and 5 grand is a steal in my opinion if it's as good as it looks. Trouble is, it doesn't matter if it's 5 grand or 500,000 grand; I haven't got a pot to p*** in or indeed a window to throw it out of! :D

DS's are amazing but incredibly expensive to mend if you cant do it yourself!

If I could afford a DS I'd also buy one of those Joe 90 brain pattern transplanters and assume the brain pattern of Nigel Wild! :D

(Although I'd probably get arrested for wandering round Morrison's car park with a microphone giving a running commentary on all the cars! :D )

What, all these cars? I'm sure that George could just explain to the ?Renault owner that you don't get out enough and not to worry. EDIT: actually, looking again, it might be a VW.

If I could afford a DS, I could probably afford my own personal mechanic to do nothing but keep it looking very lovely, and a bigger understairs cupboard for him or her to live in.

Car still at garage. They are a little stuck sourcing an ABS compatible rear wheel bearing. (See post in Wanted section).

If anyone knows of a source please let me know. Thanks.

Car is home. Wheel bearing sorted, finally, silence!

New calipers fitted (the old ones I knew were pretty destroyed, the seals were no more).

Only problem now is that due to the delay with the bearing, the car was sat for a few days
half way through the brake work, so even though they've bled the system, it is still spongy.

So, back again tomorrow morning it would seem. Argh.

But in better news, actually managed to track down the correct thermostat! Who would have thought it would
be so hard? The correct one is on the right. Now, it didn't come with a gasket, just the ring seal. The parts shop
thought it would be fine to use some blue hylomar on the mating surfaces, and as there didn't seem to be any kind
of gasket there when I took it off, hmmm?

Bleeding the front brakes is a piece of proverbial. All you need is some clear tube, a few spanners and a glamorous assistant. Tube just goes from nipple to reservoir - so you need a long bit of tube if doing the passenger side!

If it is the thermostat with the rubber ring seal then there isn't a gasket, both surfaces mate and seal on this rubber which fits over the edge of the stat. If either of the mating surfaces are badly pitted a small amount of blue hylomar can be used to assist the seal if required but not normally needed.
Ref. the brakes, they may just need the new pads to bed in?

You don't even need an assistant - just a piece of wood between steering wheel and brake pedal. Never thought to reuse the bled LHM, just binned it.
Maybe they just need bedding in, although I wouldn't have described new pads as feeling spongy?
