Diesel leak

Post by H Reg Pete »

Hi Guys
Noticed today a smell of diesel coming through the air vents on my BX 1.7 TZD Turbo, My immediate thought was it's the return pipes on the injectors again, but on inspection I found this time it is leaking from the top of the throttle housing where the throttle lever attaches to the throttle mechanism so I would suspect that there’s a seal that needs replacing. Has any one got a diagram of the throttle mechanism or can tell me what part I need to order and how difficult this would be to replace, on the face of it, it looks fairly simple to do but having never stripped one of these before I thought I would seek some advise first.
Thanks

Hi Pete, I think Sleepy's your man on this one. I take it your pump is a Lucas/CAV one.

I think they have O rings on the shaft, sometimes the housing is worn, but lets hope not.

thanks, I'm not sure what make the pump is, was in hurry to get to the Motherinlaws for dinner and the wife was bleeting so couldn't spend to much time under the bonnet, I'll have a better look tomorow. The top of the houseing was soaking with diesel and when wipped away, verry quickly returned from the top of the shaft, lets hope its just an O ring

Hi Yes there are "O" ring seals on the shaft , the CAV/Lucas one tend to wear more than the Bosch ones. The wear has to be bad to require a new top and spindle. It can be done insitue but is difficult and can be fiddley.
Cheers.
Geoff.
PS. It is quite possable to waste a lot of fuel very quickly as I found out with the same thing.

Thanks again, any idea what size O rings I need to order, the leeks not that bad at the moment but these things never get any better. I was losing more diesel when the return pipes to the injectors rotted out and thats a fiddly enough job.

The size of the "O" rings/ring will depend on the make of pump and the age the best thing to do is go to an diesel injection chap and get them from him. I doubt if a citroen dealer would be interested at all. Any "O" ring will not do as they have to be diesel proof.
Cheers.
Best of luck.
Geoff.

Hi if its the lucas pump you may find like me you will need a new throttle spindle and a top cover these can be aquired from a scrappers then you need some new o rings my local Parkinsons Lucas specialists supplied a pack of 10 for 74p the part number is 7185-950 but just remember to work very clean as you want no muck in the filter.

Thanks, that all sounds very strait forward, but does anyone have the phone number or the web address for the Lucas centre, I’ve tried searching on the net but to no avail. And living up here amongst the sticks makes it virtually impossible to get anything easily.

Try looking for a local diesel specialist - you will probaly find they know all about this problem and will do the whole job for you quite cheaply.
