Hi folks,

Im in a position suddenly needing to do some miles from now on, so the little 1400 is a bit revvy for regular motorway and obviously a diesel would be better.

Does anyone fancy a swap/part ex, my BX for your diesel?

Does seem to be the only complain about the 1.4 - short gearing. Wonder if it's possible to fit a taller fifth like it is on the valvers?

They're higher geared than the GS, but while the GS seems able to run at high speed fully loaded without a significant fuel penalty the BX 14 gets quite thirsty.

Upping the gearing will work, so long as you don't want to load it up much, and it may struggle in headwinds and steeper hills. I've generally found that with their lower powered vehicles at least, Citroen have generally already found the best compromise for all round use.

Its a different box from the XU powered BX's i thought?

That's right. You'll need to look at gearboxes fitted to other TU engined vehicles, like AX, ZX, Saxo and Berlingo. Depending on the final drive ratio, one of these may have a suitable gear to swap in.

1.4 ZX models have completely different gearing to the BX IIRC in the MA gearbox. My ZX Avantage used to do 70mph in 2nd gear!
Ruins the driving enjoyment, but economy was much better than the BX which got worse at higher speeds like you say.

Well it failed its MOT yesterday on a patch on inner sill and steering rack worn, luckily found a rack on flea bay for 20 plus post, woo hoo!!!!

Is that a non-PAS recon rack? If so it sounds like the same people I got the PAS rack for Timex - seems a good quality unit!
