I think it's partly the desire to have 'original' sized speakers - look at the fuss over original accessories! In my case I travel quite a bit with the seats down and parcel shelf out, so wouldn't want to be without rear speakers. Maybe I could just connect between speakers in the standard location and some on the shelf...

The only reason I can think of is making big holes in the parcel shelf.
What connectors did you use? I want to do the same thing, but I'll make a little cabinet for them to sit on top of the shelf
