One of those days (or "oil help!") (or "oh flaps")

Post by djoptix »

I've got to drive to Milton Keynes tomorrow, so I thought I'd change the oil in the Synergie. Because I have to look smart for work, I bought some nice silicone gloves today to keep my hands clean.

Lay down, removed plug. Dropped plug in bucket. Moved bucket into place, at which point there was a MASSIVE gust of wind, and this happened.

Image

But the best was yet to come. It wasn't until I had drained all the oil that I discovered BOTH of what I thought were new bottles of 15/40 in the shed, were in fact bottles of filthy black used oil that I haven't got round to taking to the tip yet.

The only other oil I had was some cheapo Asda 20/50, and some nice Castrol GTX 10/40 I've been saving for Mrs Optix's riceburner, so I have put in 3 litres of 20/50 and 1.5 litres of 10/40. Will the car survive 250 or so miles of this, or will I have to drain it all again and go out to 24hr Tesco...?

Answers before 0730 tomorrow morning please...

You won't notice mate. I've run engines on far worse

It won't work as efficiently and will likely degrade quicker, so don't run it any longer than what you need to, if you can avoid it.

Just don't thrash it around, be gentle from cold etc. 20w50 is quite thick stuff, and oil starvation issues on the D6C will be even more sensitive with it.

Hmm. That's what I was thinking. I'll order a filter and change it again over the weekend then...

Dear Djoptix,
It is very funny, but not when it happens to you, especially if the oil is hot too :!
If I was you I would avoid going anywhere near Wales at the moment, especially whilst there is so much Measles about over there.

With the use of a pair of tights you could have put the old oil back in and had done. Its a synergy, it's had worse, guaranteed!

(ps the tights where to hide the oil covered face of probable shame, not for filtering the oil ;) )

Haha! Trouble is if I'd had to get tights, I would have felt obliged to get the dress and the nails too...

It has made it to MK, just need to get home again then I'll treat it to another change.

Only problem now is that I went to Lidl to buy some tools, and when I got out some moron accused me of hitting his car when I parked. Which I didn't. Not what I need!!!!

thats getting quite common round here , getting blamed for "old" damage to cars when there probably isnt a mark on yours.
dont spose you took any pics of your car or theres to show both cars condition.?

what were you in Mk for ?
and why would you got to lidls lol

Semi-synth is already mineral mixed with synthetic, so no worries. I've mixed oils in many different engines without issue. 20w50 is a fair chunk too gloopy, especially in this joke of a spring season, but as has been said, probably ok for a short while if you avoid ragging the engine (including the turbocharger) before the oil has had chance to warm.

In order -

Doc, I am in Southmead, I'm sure we'll run into one another at some point?

Vince - luckily I think it blew far enough to cool on its way to me. I was about 3 feet from the sump when it happened, so the oil blew pretty much horizontally at me!

Citronut - sadly not, I had to scrub my face with washing up liquid to get it off though...

Mickey Taker - I was buying a Lidl bike toolset, they're on offer for £25 at the moment and they're quite good. I was in MK visiting a client, I work for a sound/light/video installation company and we do a lot of work for churches, one of which is MKCC in Oldbrook.

The bloke who accused me of hitting his car, well, his word against mine but as far as I'm concerned he is full of it, there was paint missing from his car but none on my bumper. I did take pictures, also enquired about CCTV (there isn't any, but when I explained why I was asking the Lidl duty manager opined that the gentleman in question was "a cheeky f***ing b*stard") and forewarned my insurance company to tell him to jog on if he gets in touch...

Just re-read this and realised it's a Synergie not the BX....if that's an XUD I wouldn't even bother changing it afterwards! You could run one on cow slurry!

HDI.....bit more sensitive, but still pretty solid.
