Have just been told to expect a bill for about £360 once this is all sorted. That's all four pipes. Apparently rather than corroding, they've been rubbing on the arm, so have worn through rather than rotted through. However, he's had a peek under the clips and the coating has cracked in the usual manner. Good job I've been earning more money this year!

That bill seems very cheap Ian, fingers crossed it can be done. My mate Tim's wife's motor has just failed with zackly the same problem in the very same place. However, he is very brave and is going to do the work himself just to see if he can do it. He is quite confidant but he has never done it before. We took the rear subframe off the scrapper at the w/end as a practice run and we were surprised it came away as easily as it did.

Had I better facilities, I might have had a go, but the Scotland trip is getting close and I really need my tow car up and running again! I think the ABS slightly complicates matters and having looked at the work required (and the need for good axle stands etc) I decided my specialist was far better equipped in terms of workshop tools and knowledge!

The high mileage only refers to the gearbox and other moving parts.I fitted another low mileage engine 6 weeks after I bought it,as the cooling system started to pressurize.I found another good engine at Edwards and Sons in Billericay, and drove the car it was in to test it.It had been rear ended, but it had been well maintained.Mark took it out while I visited my son and daughter in nearby Basildon, and I went back a couple of hours later and loaded it into my CX Safari. Chris Jacob of CGS changed it for me,together with the new clutch, octopus, timing belt and water pump and a few other things as I had just had an op and couldn't do anything myself. The engine has probably only done about 150/160k miles. But the gearbox is original, which why it is a bit noisy. My new TZD has only 202K on the clock, and it will get the same or even better treatment than the last one(Dollywobbler's) Hope it gives you good service as it did for me.

Sadly I think the turbo is on its last legs. Smokey and noisy. Hope it'll keep going for a bit yet though - can't afford to spend any more on it!

Sounds like your not having a lot of luck with the car. Maybe it was an omen that I didn't get it back after all. With regard to the rear suspension problem, the offside rear cylinder was replaced with a new one a few days before the ICCCR in Rome in 2008.It let go on my way to work 2 days before we were due to leave for it. I also took out the nearside one out to check it,and opened up the drain holes in the housings to stop any future corrosion. Both boots were replaced at the same time. By the way,if you do have to fit a new cylinder to the Estate,do NOT fit a saloon one as the piston is a smaller diameter. I still have the old one I changed, and hope to get the pinhole in it welded up and keep as a spare. There is a new turbo on Ebay at £145.

With reference to the heavy oil consumption and leaks, check the head gasket. My new BX has a similar leak from the back of the engine, and the XantiaTD we have had the same thing. The head gasket was changed and the oil leak almost disappeared. The sump is leaking a bit now,as there is no gasket between it and the block, only a mastik sealant.

Thanks. I'm not going to grumble given the miles it's done! It sounds like the turbo started getting noisy while it was still in your ownership, so it can't be on its last legs really. Thanks for the turbo tip.

Head gasket or cam cover gasket? I know the XUD has a weakness regarding the latter. It's on the to do list. Every BX diesel I've had has had a leak here.

Total price is £413. Needed a rear caliper semi-stripping so the unsurprisingly stuck nipple could be drilled out, had a new proper metal clip fitted to a front strut in place of some rather ineffective ties and all the necessary work for the repipe. Apparently there is some corrosion in the subframe mounting area and there is a crack in the rear subframe - that probably explains the noise I get where it sounds like something big is cracked...

It also looks like the nearside front caliper may be binding, and the offside one apparently has low pads.

Plenty to try and sort out before the Scottish trip then!

I'd better get saving for the next bout of expenditure!

Can the crack in the subframe be fixed by being welded up?

I had the one on the DTR done in situ, they then reinforced with a metal plate after.

It would be interesting to see a photo of where it has failed, for something to inspect regularly or made carry out some preventative reinforcement. Mine regularly gets loaded so this is something to keep an eye on.

Got it back. It's the front subframe that's cracked. It split an injector return pipe on the way home too, so both I and the car now reek of diesel. Not feeling the love for this car at the moment and am seriously considering its future. It doesn't drive that well and needs a fair bit more work doing. I certainly don't fancy driving it around Scotland at the moment. Ugh.

If the turbo is on the way out i'm not surprised it drives crap, if that was sorted i bet the car would feel quite good again? It's probably worth making the effort on the car if you intend to keep it for quite a few years especially if its a daily. Can the tech weekend source you a 2nd hand turbo & get iti fitted cheaply?

The turbo isn't such a big issue - I just get embarrassed by the soot cloud behind it. It's the suspension that's the real problem at the moment. If the horrible creaking sound it makes every now and then is the subframe, then getting that welded up will help. It might need spheres all-round though. It's very inconsistent in bounce from one corner to the other and crashes about a bit too. I think new throttle and clutch cables might also improve things. Hopefully I'll continue to earn reasonable money for a bit...

The real problem was buying a Merc W124. That has a few issues of its own, but it's beautiful to drive. Entirely effortless. Shame it does 15-27mpg...
