In what way doesn't it fit? Mine was also from a LHD drive car, and I've never noticed any problems in fit!

The new one is on the left, while the Hurricane one is on the right. The cross section of the new one appears to be symmetrical while the Hurricane one isn't. It was possible to get the new one in but it was slightly twisted once you had it in place to replace the rear screw, and it didn't fit under the gear stick moulding either without a horrible gap. The one from the Hurricane definitely hasn't been cut or modified but is as it came from the mould. If it isn't to do with the fact that L and R hand drives are different shapes could the differences be to do with model specifications? Maybe I just did it wrong? It wouldn't fit though no matter how I fiddled with it and there was nothing inside causing an obstruction.

It's a clear difference so you haven't done anything wrong! I wonder if the high spec. versions (with the socket) are handed, but lower models aren't? Mine certainly doesn't fit perfectly at the rear passenger side - I know this as it helped to run the wires for a bass tube I had in the rear footwell once. That would mean it's the opposite to your Hurricane console, which would fit seeing as it was from a LHD car. Will have to compare symmetry later!

I'll have a complete guess, the new one is from a 4x4 or an auto as the transmission tunnel is a slightly different size/shape?

I thought it might be something to do with differences in the transmission tunnel. I should have compared it to the one in my TGD but didn't think.

It occurred to me that they might be handed when I bought it, but from the picture it looked exactly the same as a RHD car. I need to check it with the one in the TGD but I suspect it's a model specific difference rather than a left or right hand drive difference. Actually, I've got another one in the cupboard under my stairs but it's buried under so much BX shite I'm not even going to go there!

Mk1 and 2 are the same, the higher specced later ones did have headphone jacks

Have you double checked I don't have a mk1 to cross reference against but if i remember i'll check my txd to see what shape that is & report back.

Could it be a 4x4 centre console with the cut out to go over the rear propshaft tunnel?

Haven't had much to report BXwise of late - been snowed under with work, lost both my parents ( well not 'lost' really: I know exactly where they are - in Balderton cemetery). In short, things have been a bit fraught so I've consigned myself to mechanically illiterate and irrelevant tomfoolery elsewhere on the forum (not in technical though - as to be honest, I don't understand any of it )
Anyway, onwards and upwards as they say. The Hurricane now has a fresh ticket and tax (straight through, no advisories ) new front comfort spheres and accumulator (the ride is transformed!) and is about to get a new clutch and a load of cosmetic tlc type stuff ready for the NEC. The TGD needs a bit of work too but that will have to wait 'til my bank account has recovered from the Hurricane's recent onslaught.
And here it is. It's a BX and it's . . . green.
