New rust location

Post by NeilGP »

:( I think I have just found a new rust location, the top of the rear inner wings!
Has anyone seen this before?

no not seen it there can only guess that the tailgate leaking would be suspect, i had a rather rusty rear n/s pillar caused by leaking tailgate? but that should patch ok would investigate the rust further tho paying attention to the boot floor seams and underside chassis rails as these are rust hotspots too.

Yes Neil,

Many times sadly, that panel gets bombarded with water/salt etc all the time, my Mk1 16TRS auto which was solid on the inner wings etc was tottaly shot there and ended up being broken, also the red 19TZD which I sold to George also had a patch there too.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

I thought that was a well known spot for BX rust. Whenever I've bought a car I always give it a thorough prodding in the cubby holes for the ominous sound of crispy crunchiness!

This was the first time I had known about this.
The boot floor and exhaust hanger in the N/S rear rear where dealt with 5-6 years ago.
My heart sank yesterday when I was fitting new foam into the the air vents, rested on the inner arch and heard the scrunching noise.

I have ground back the locations and will repair them in the next few days.

I had the same problem too, but assumed that the two pinholes I found were where someone had screwed in a couple of self tapping screws previously.

Both rear arches need a liner or protector of sorts. It's something I've been pondering but had too much else on to give it serious thought. It shouldn't be hard to do, but needs a bit f thought to do it nicely

Couldn't a liner get damaged & then cause even more damage if moisture got behind it? Might be better to just put on multiple coats of paint & underseal instead?

Wheel arch liners are a real rust trap. Just ask XM owners!!

It could yes mate, but I wasn't thinking of a close fitting liner as such.
Ideally a waterproof but 'spray-absorbant' material fitted within an inch or so under the rotten areas shown in photos above /\ This, if fitted correctly, should protect the areas robe to rust, but also allow full suspension travel.
If you give 1/2 inch clearance either side, then it should also allow drainage and clearance to prevent build up of debris.
As you say though, sufficient coatings of underseal etc could also protect

What I've done with any welded repairs is to coat the whole patch, not just the seams, with polyurethane sealant. Then the whole lot with underbody wax. Wheel arch liners will protect, but also as has been pointed out, cause local rust where they are fastened. I wish I knew what the ideal solution was!

Probably no liners & every year you jet wash those areas out & re-apply underseal etc...which tbh would be a real faff. Multiple layers of paint i reckon with underseal, but you'd have to have your car off the road for some time to do the job properly. The half inch clearance sounds like another solution though.

The estate i'm currently repairing/rebuilding was gone on the rear inner wings, on one side the repair plate is about 15 inches long.
Wheel arch liners are the way to go, that's the reason modern cars don't rot to the same degree under the wheel arches. However most cars now are using a liner material which i think is a type of plastic but looks and feels like felt. A local plastics company manufactures it,i've got the back of two of my cars lined with a thicker form. it also absorbs water like felt and acts like a wet compress. Hard plastic is best for protection.

The 14 I had needed a repair in this area. There was some part of the fuel breather system attached to this area and I guess it had trapped dirt against the panel, rather like the extra fuel tank fitted to some models seems to do, resunlting in the rusty fuel filler surround.

I'd be careful about fitting a liner - if it had any gaps around it at all dirt and spray could get through and then sit there, allowing the whole thing to go rusty.
