Re: Mat's BX Blog
My Disco is a four-pot Tdi and it's definitely the right engine choice. I quite like the agricultural noises it makes, though I'll readily concede that it doesn't sound even remotely as good as a V8. Neighbour has a TD5 and that sounds great. It seems very revvy too, whereas the Tdi is about done by 3000rpm. The complication of the TD5 puts me off though - especially the wiring loom that sits inside the engine (for the injectors), gets soaked in oil and either stops working, or allows oil to travel down its length and into the ECU, which promptly dies. My Tdi has a throttle cable. Much better!
The Lucida turbo diesel engine is a joke. Pops more head gaskets than a Rover K series, and can suffer cracked heads/blocks as well apparently. So much for Toyota reliability...

Re: Mat's BX Blog
This is very easily sorted if caught in advance,, simply a matter of cleaning off the top of the plug under the rocker cover and totally sealing the end where the wires enter with a suitable pu sealant. The initial misgivings of the reliability of the TD5 proved to be misfounded with it proving itself a very reliable engine (the first batch had oil pump sprocket problems)Dollywobbler wrote: especially the wiring loom that sits inside the engine (for the injectors), gets soaked in oil and either stops working, or allows oil to travel down its length and into the ECU, which promptly dies. The 200tdi is a cracking everyday engine (better than the 300), probably the best ever built by LR IMHO but the Defender in standard form lacked legs for motorway work.

Re: Mat's BX Blog
My neighbour's TD5 has clocked up over 250,000 miles, so they're clearly not dreadful. They just have plenty of foibles!

Re: Mat's BX Blog
I can see both sides of this. I have a Disco Td5 as a daily driver, and it's fairly revvy, certainly more revvy than the TDi, but nowhere near an XUD turbo. The in-head-loom is no worse than any other similar vehicle (the Td5 technology is essentially identical to VW's Pumpe Duse system). A minor modification to a new loom makes them very reliable. The engine electronics are fairly reliable, probably about as reliable as petrol injection engines of 10-15 years ago.Dollywobbler wrote:Neighbour has a TD5 and that sounds great. .. I can't talk too loudly, mine's off the road at the moment needing a clutch and (irritatingly) a DMF. Most stupid invention of the last 15 years! Need to find a solid conversion and a standard cushion-hub clutch.....
this might be a signature

Re: Mat's BX Blog
I've caught up. DMF = dual mass flywheel. Now I can understand people getting hacked off with fancy engineering that's fragile, but isn't something that smooths out the power pulses a good idea in principle? I remember just about every Brit single and twin in the 70s disassembling itself due to vibration and anyone with a Yamaha SR500 would tell you how quickly a big single's power pulses destroys a chain.
