Tim - Perhaps the petrol cars have a totally different feel which is why you thought that? There's no slip, its smooth & compared to my TXD, it feels much nicer. Also at low revs, when setting off, there is hardly any judder, so i can't see a problem myself & it'll save Paul a few quid. By all means he can get another opinion & if they say it needs doing, then my txd is fuxxed then :(

Paul - It only judders because you're slipping it too much, i didn't have any probs when i drove it, unless its gone down hill dramatically over the last few weeks? Anyway, upto you matey :)

Mat I've driven loads of diesels and TD's over the years, compared to Sandre's (same car) its rather unpleasent, heavy and juddery....plus he has bought the clutch already.

I remember on the TZD (red shed) I thought the clutch was OK, but was slipping, when I changed it the difference was amazing!

Money well spent, it s a genuine Valeo clutch and with the mileage Paul does should last him out! :D

Juddering will be the flywheel, unless the clutch is contaminated with oil, possibly leaking from the rear main seal or input seal. Get the flywheel refaced while the clutch is out.

It judders VERY slightly I admit when pulling away in first, normally when cold, if you give it a few more revs and slip it slightly it doesnt.

Mine does that - it's fine, I compensate. Although it took a while to get used to hill starts again  (Herts being dead flat and all). I haven't driven Paul's Hurricane recently to be able to remember how different it is.

EDIT - meant to say - up to Paul really innit. If he's finding the clutch unpleasant to use, then change it. His car/he's going to be the one mostly driving it, whatever anyone else thinks.

Tim, I had no issues driving Paul's car & found the judder to be so small as not to be worth doing anything about (low revs doing a standing start), didn't find it heavy or sticky either.

You mention that you've driven loads of diesels over the years, & yet you've said that you thought the red shed's clutch was ok, but it was slipping?? How could you not tell that it wasn't slipping, or have i misread what you meant?

Anyway, you've got your view & i've given Paul mine, Paul was in the car with me so he can testify to what i said & how the car felt (albeit from the psgr seat) & it was absolutely fine & drove nicely. I'm not having a dig mate, i just can't agree with you is all, but then again, what do i know ;)

Paul, let Shaun make the decision mate if you're unsure, if he thinks it's toast then get it changed, otherwise save the money & keep the new clutch for when you may need it :) It'll be interesting to find out what he thought seeing as he does mega miles & must have driven many a car into the ground.

Pauls car does drive well, but compared to Sandre's the clutch is stiff, and heavy (in my opinion), its his call of course but I think would much improve the drive.

The red shed when I bought it had a very tired clutch, was really heavy and not smooth in operation, Ken fitted a new one (LUK) which unfortunatly slipped but was light and smooth compared to how it was, I then had ANOTHER Valeo one fitted before the Classic Challenge and it transformed the car. Light, smooth, no juddering and most importantly no slip!

I just think if you drive a car all the time when things wear gradually you dont notice it as much as someone fresh tries it, and once replaced the difference is noticeable...spheres are a always a good example.

Within a period of a few days I drove Pauls Hurricane, Sandre's Hurricane and also her TZD, and found that even though cosmetically challenged compared to the other two the TZD drove better (smoother and more pokey) and that Pauls clutch was in my opinion worn.

Fair enough matey, perhaps its a sign that my TXD could do with a clutch, as Pauls Hurricane was nicer than mine, haha....

Probably Mat, if you can live with it then fair enough, I think you would be surprised how different a new one feels. they dont just go but gradually decline. Have you replaced the cable recently?

I've had a new clutch fitted in the past, so do know what it feels like, can't remember if the cable was changed at the same time though, probably not tbh, but i don't mind a slightly heavy clutch as it always felt lighter than the cooper s one :) If i don't have enough leg muscle to push down on the pedal, then i know its due to be changed.

OK well its down to you if you think its fine then keep it as is. My valver had a really sticky clutch and it turned out to be a wrecked cable, £10 later it was sorted. So worth checking the cable is ok first (which we have done on Pauls by disconnnecting it from the arm and seeing if it moved freely)

Apart from taking a bit more effort to press the pedal, thats the only thing i've noticed, but i have done about 80k on it though, but would hope to get at least 100k minimum out of clutch. The clutch was an LUK one, not sure if that feels different to a valeo? I'll get the cable inspected though, incase it is on its way out, cheers for the tip :)

I am driving with a slipping clutch. I am being a tight wad. However ignoring any negative effects the car under discussion maybe suffering I would observe that while I am not carrying loads or towing and I can drive like an old fella with my feathered country trilby on, I have no problem with it. If I was doing a higher mileage, driving in town, looking to drive in a more aggressive or modern way to get on, or likely doing heavier work moving stuff in the car I would change the clutch. But while I have the car doing lighter duty its driving very well. I get a little judder and, as you describe, cold pulling away is probably worst. Light feet are all that are needed to balance the take off.

So far I have had about 3000 miles extra clutch. What is that really worth over, what, 100k for a clutch? Note - I have no plan to sell my car. About £4.50 if you pay someone else to put it in. Yep, I am a tight wad. But it is worth looking at your estimated mileage before you might sell, to see if the economics work out well. WE are still in Bangernomics despite that BX are now bottom rung classics.

Do it yourself and its very much more appealing on economics. I can do it but I really must avoid it, as I have to much else to do. I am hoping to eak this clutch out till I have a workshop sorted fully. So there is a little method in my madness as the saving in DIY should pay to have Homer going, He has a new clutch and can be doing the heavy work.

No idea if that helps, but I normally try and have a strategy or reasoned argument for a course of action.

I replaced the factory clutch in my TZD at 78,000 miles when I replaced a leaking rear crank shaft oil seal, the original clutch still looked in excellent condition but I changed it anyway as I had bought the new one in advance. Unfortunately a lot of the so called 'new' clutches are actually reconditioned old units sold as new and I think this may be what I was sold (LUK in a LUK box) . The splined bush in the centre plate must have been worn more than the one I took out as I can now feel extra back lash through the pedal as the spigot shaft splines take up the slack in the bush. It is only very slight but is annoying as the old original clutch had no slack in the bush. I'm half tempted to put the old original clutch back in. I should have checked for play before fitting but didn't
