Demag's TGS Auto

Post by demag »

I thought if I start a blog I can keep everything in one place. Although this car is a runner there is more stuff revealing itself all the time. It does look very solid thankfully. It also looks like it's had some wax sprayed at some time in the past which I am hoping to re-do soon. I'll try and update this first post with jobs that need doing or have been done.

So, not in any particular order.

To Do:
Cambelt.
Air filter. Dexron ll change.
Body repairs/paint. This will be long term and be governed by available funds. There are loads of little dings all over the place and some mis-matched spray jobs.
Sunroof repairs. It works but the framework looks rusty and it's noisy in operation.
Digital clock has segments missing. There's another in the glovebox of unknown quality.
Gear linkage check/refurb.
Front panel rust and slight damage behind n/s headlamp.

Done:
Oil and filter.
Speedo working.
Carburettor rebuilt with service kit. No petrol smell now.
Electric cooling fan repaired.
Removed yellow covers from headlamp bulbs. :D
Lubed drivers door hinges.
All spheres regassed.

Dave
g00d to see it back in the fold. It was a nice old bus when I had it.

Did you check the link back to my pics on flickr?

I swapped the digi clocks over and that one in it worked perfectly (the one in the glovebox was the old knackered one IIRC).

Sunroof was always rusty but worked in both directions.

The speedo was working when it left me. Did it come with the door?

No, no door I'm afraid but I think I may know where it is now.
I used it for work yesterday (to the amusement of my workmates!) and the clock seemed to be working better, maybe it just needs the contacts cleaning. As we all know when cars stand silly things like this start to play up.
I hope the weather holds out so I can do a bit to it. I have a 12v buffer somewhere. I'll have to dig it out and have a go at the bodywork. It looks really pretty in that photo of yours.

Smell of petrol under the bonnet which I hope can be fixed with a carb service kit.
If you're short of time, remove the vacuum pipe from the carb and sniff it - if it smells of petrol or if you can see any petrol around the pipe or the tube on the carb then replace the anti-stall diaphram first and leave the rest of the carb service kit for a nice summmers day.

The carb does look damp. I thought maybe worn float valve.
Found the RP number today and decoded. :D Build date Jan 4th 1990.
Colour is Gris Axinite which I think is a champagny greyie beigy colour!

If anyone has a rear seat cushion in the red herringbone colour I could be interested.

Thanks.

Hi Dave,
It's a shame you didn't buy this BX a couple of weeks ago as there was COMPLETE interior set F/S which sold (9th March) for only 99p on E-bay #-o

I wonder if the purchaser needs the whole set, they may come forward if there a member on here [-o<

I've messaged the eBay seller to see if I can get any details of the buyer. You never know your luck. Does Alan Goodyear only sell complete interiors or will he split?

Lying in bed last night I was thinking about my old Bx Leader. The cooling fan didn't work on that when I bought it. Turned out to be a dodgy connection on the power relay. I wonder......

Today was a good day (apart from having to go to work). I decided to take the Bx as it hadn't moved all week and the roads would be quiet. After breakfast I popped out to the carpark and had a look at the fan. Turns out the relay was working as there was power to the thermostatic switch at the bottom of the rad. I also succeeded in popping a fuse while testing.
I had to leave the car and get back to work. When I finished I jumped in the Bx and drove home, however on the way I gave myself a real fright, it was ticking over at 1600rpm! I had a look when I got home and had pulled the throttle cable when I was checking the wiring to the thermostatic switch. I re-routed it and it ticked over fine but the fan still didn't work. The cables from the switch vanished into the loom so I followed the wiring from the fan and found the grubbiest pair of connectors behind the n/s headlamp. =D> I had to remove the headlamp to get access before I could clean all the muck and crap from them to then find blue mold and gunge on the actual contacts themselves. I sprayed them with WD40 and kept snapping them in and out to clean them, I then dried them and started the engine and waited. After about 5 minutes the fan kicked in and ran for a few minutes. Great! I decided to go for a test drive to make sure it didn't over heat. Well it was like driving a different car, the throttle pedal was a lot lighter so I can only assume it wasn't routed right when I picked it up. It's the first time I've driven it and felt really confident in it. I gave it a bit of stick and was surprised at the speed, it's certainly not slow considering the specification. So the first and probably most important job is out of the way.
