They look fairly new and a good colour but the pic isn't the best quality.

New plugs only been run for 1000 miles, new cap/arm, coil, leads (boughicord) temp sensor, fuel pump/filter and lines, injectors cleaned, no air leaks, still lean on 1&3 even after richening the mixture back up a few turns post MOT, still a little hesitation in lower rev range. The SAD is working and closes fully once warm, compression is good @ 175. 174, 175. 177, timing is set and vac/ad is working, but still this prob persists, tho not as bad as it was, does anyone know the standard approx factory setting for the air/mixture screw on the airflow meter? Mine is currently set @ 7.5 turns out, running about 4.5 on the co's, maybe needs a little richer? But then the idle is unsettled.

Why is it that your car seems to be running so rich  My SAAB is of the same era and with no cat and is also multipoint fuel injection. The c/o rates for cars with carbs is upto 3%, the c/o rates for injection cars should be 1.5% My SAAB runs at 1.75% on the M.O.T's and has done so for years now without any adjustments at all :D
Secondly, please forgive my own ignorance , when you say you car is running lean, does that mean too weak or too rich :?:
I hope this helps :)

I presume that your GTi is earlier Jetronic rather than Motronic as you mention new cap/arm & coil?

I wonder if you have a sluggish ignition amplifier that is giving a deformed pulse every second output causing a slower burn as a result? :?

It also could be dirty injectors causing faulty fuel metering. Try swapping injectors 1 & 2 on the rail and see if the lean/rich effect transfers.

Have had the injectors cleaned, yes is jetronic LE3, thats a good shout with the injectors, will swap 1/2 and 3/4 round, but if there is still running lean then there is a significant prob somewhere, then it gets down the electronics side of things which is way out of my league, ecu hell.

Hold on my non fuel injection 1.6 runs at 0.15% CO.... according to the MOT station and I have even had lower scores...
