MOT fail - fail - pass

Post by patersom10 »

took my ZX for its first Mot under my ownership last week, failed on brake imbalance across, front & rear brakes effectiveness, parking brake effectiveness

so I changed front/rear discs and pads, offside front caliper sliding pins were stuck so fixed. all seemed to be good pistons free etc & made good handbrake.

took to back to the local garage in Luton, failed again on parking brake ! P*ssed off

took to Halfords autocentre straight from independent garage, 45 min later passed no problems.

the man at Halfords couldn't see any issue with the parking brake ... confused :?:

I suspect that would be a fruitless conversation. The only way forward for information would be to have a vosa appeal test but seeing as he got an MOT elsewhere it's really not worth the aggravation and probably no longer possible in the circumstances. :(

Ive had similar in the past. I had a 1970's Oldsmobile. The parking brake on americans is similar to mercs and the XM with a little foot peddle to lock it on.

The chap wasnt happy with the balance of the parking brake (id checked it previously, seemed fine) i took it away adjusted it all again, brought it back, failed again.

Next day i took it apart again, checked it all, didnt see the need to adjust anything, took it to the station i had wanted to in the first place, passed, no issue.

I think sometimes testers get a bit 'hung up' on a particular issue.

Think they got the hump as I did the work myself, can be sure in wont be going back. And I thought halfords would rip me off ! £29 mot creating work etc but can vouch for the Luton centre, chap let me inspect the rest of the car under the ramp pointed out bits that I need to keep an eye on etc. very friendly and helpful.

But that is what an MOT is supposed to be like, isn't it? Care of the vehicle.

The garage I use have 2 testers, but one refuses to test Timex because he assumes it'll fail spectacularly. The other guy will test whatever and seems very understanding about older cars.

That's not a valid reason to refuse a test...
