ABS

Post by winslo »

Got my BX out the garage last night. First time its been used since 1st October (it started first time)

Road a bit slippy and braked and wheels locked up? Car says it has ABS (badge on the rear) but never actually tried it before

Cant see any abs light when I turn ignition on

Any ideas?

cheers

On ABS cars the light should come on when the ignition is on, but should go out when you start the engine. Its in the bottom right of the instrument panel (in the rev counter or clock, which ever it has).

But remember, just because it has ABS, doesn't mean that you can't lock the wheels up. I have done it many times in my Xsara & the BX ABS system isn't as good.

if it has ABS and its functioning correctly you should not be able to lock the brakes up

I doubt a BX will have a OBD II port to find out if any faults?

No bud, it wont ime afraid. It will be trial and error whether you find the fault but i hope you do. I thank my TZD every day it starts, the ABS light comes on and then goes off.

Fingers crossed.

I was under the impression, and stand to be corrected that ABS only works above approx 5mph? It might even be a little higher on the older ABS systems.

no it doesn't, but it does have an ABS ECU,

although i prefer to check/test the sensors at each sensor plug connector, others do this from the ECU pin outs

ABS

Post by Philip Chidlow »

I don't know if it helps but my current TZD has ABS but there's no light.... In fact there's no light unit behind the dash - the live wiring for the check light is still there (now safely insulated after a fire scare!) so presumably the ABS issue was not confronted, it was instead rather circumvented! Having had reason to brake recently there is no ABS and although the ABS badge (easily covered up or removed) might be an issue it did get its last MOT in this state a month before I collected it... Either that (sorry don't get me started: there were other major issues!) or the MOTs dodgy. So it's a case of devising a clever, let's say 'bypass' solution to the problem... Either that or do it (expensively) proper, like ;)

Removal of the abs lamp is not an uncommon occurrence on older cars where cost of fixing it is prohibitive and difficult.

I think both of mine still work but the abs on the TZI doesn't although I have tested the ABS in a Ivey road a few years back and it did work !

if the warning lamp is removed the ABS will not function at all, if the ABS No. 14 fuse is removed the warning lamp will stay on
