looks like there is a slight leak from the driveshaft which was more obvious when I jacked it up... (ie oil on the floor)

Good pics. How many revolutions was the nut loose?
Is the driveshaft rubber torn? As there's so much oil everywhere I would suspect a leaking LHM-retun pipe or even a brake hose. But if the gaiter's gone that's maybe it. If you don't buy a new driveshaft outer joint, wash the old one througout (as there's a lot of dirt, sand and stuff) and put a lot of new grease when changing just the rubber.

Hi All...

I need a little more assistance (?)
Having removed the end of the gearbox it is evident that there is a lot of play in the syncro hub and sleeve but the nut doesn't appear to be loose..

However .. I cannot get the sodding pin out of the selector fork.. any tips on this would be most helpful.. if I cannot get the fork off then is there any other way of tightening up the nut and will this then remove this play?

Kaap the oil is from a leaking lhm return and not from a driveshaft apologies that was a red herring

More questions (sorry)

Ok so I have removed the pin which locates the fork onto the (fifth gear selector?) rod

Do I have to now physically remove the fork? In which case do I put pressure on the rod to hold it in whilst pulling the fork out? Do I need to take out the detent spring and ball first?

:x

You don't need to remove the selector unless taking off the gear cluster as you can tighten the nut with it on.
There is a spring and ball bearing inside there which are very easy to lose. You just need to select two gears together to lock the shafts up by selecting any gear 1 - 4 then pushing the 5 gear selector to engage 5th as well.
There should not be lots of play between the 5th gear and the shaft only enough to let it slide in and out on the shaft.

Frankly that gearbox sounds beyond retrieval and I would be looking for a replacement.

TD has a longer 5th than N/A. More economical, but also slower..
