Rear ABS sensor

Post by Philip Chidlow »

Just located the fault with my ABS. And it's a rear. I have been quoted £60 for a new Citroen supplied one. Is that reasonable?

A quote from GSF. If you can get it to £50 the postage is free, saving you £4.
Not a bad price from a dealer then.

Sounds reasonable, you could take the bulb out!

AFAIK MOT testers are getting wise to this trick!
Also, if I've got ABS I want it to work...

Let's see if she gets another MOT OK.

Where is the sensor situated, maybe my Gti still has it ........ although another BX'er had the two trailing arms off me so maybe not?

My understanding is that you have to destroy the sensor to remove it so it is necessary to buy a new one...

Not necessarily. The coil and magnet assembly plugs into the unit internally so the outer casing may be relieved with emery paper to remove the rust and so on before it can be levered out with plenty of loos'nin juice. If it has failed, then there is no cure but an in situ bit of rewiring is a possibility as is removal of the rear arm for the parsimoniously inclined.

The rear sensors can be removed and reused - if you are careful.

If you remove a section of the rear arm aperture that the sensor body goes through by sawing through in two places and then opening up the aperture to allow the sensor to come out undamaged. You the have a C shaped aperture instead of an O shaped one.
This will still hold the sensor securely and allow it to be inserted and removed easily.

Oh. Now all I've got to do is relay this information to the Citroen specialist mechanic at Edwards, Billericay! Thing is they've ordered in the part. But hey ho.

I'll let you know how it goes on Thursday!

If you're going to replace it why bother to get it out in one piece?

If you're going to re-wire it why bother to take it out?

It can be got out in one piece - did one of mine a couple of years ago - took about an hour of levering etc - and it was dud at the end - and at the beginning. I expect the backplate bolts will shear as well - and have to be drilled out!

Putting new one wasn't much better even after I'd filed the hole in the casting out!

I did exactly as Jaba recommends. Broke the casing, but glued it together with Araldite. Sorted.

Well live and learn, I let the arms go for a song not realising at the time that fully functional sensors went as well, no doubt the lucky recipient was well aware though
