Oil Burner

Post by xjs36uk »

Oh well I knew it was going to be to good to be true! :|

Just took the 1.6 IE Image in for it's pickerl (Austrian MOT) and it stank the 1000 m2 workshop out in no time at all, yup she's a smoker all right.

Not upset really, the car is 25 years old and has only covered 105,000km (64,000 miles) so I suspect valve stem oil seals have hardened up.

Just want to know really if the 1600 petrol is known for this or anything else I should be aware of with this engine.

I have ordered a top end gasket and seal kit and am totally at ease with major mechanicing. (just rebuilt the diesel engine on my range rover and ain't nothing more difficult than that).

Low mileage can also be bad for piston rings/bores. If engines only do lots of short stop-start journeys, the bores have a tendency to glaze up as the thing never really hits NOT. But, people still go "Ooooh, it's low mileage" and work themselves into a lather, despite the fact it might be a dog. I had an AX GTi once, with only 29k miles on it. Drove like shit. Really slow.

This all coming from a bloke who owns a 17,500 BX mk1! (But that didn't do short journeys......it never did any. Just sat around growing old!)

It's probably the valve stem seals, but don't discount compression issues either. Get a leak down test done and see what comes up.

I'll be (lightly) honing the bores and lapping the valves as a precaution anyways. Although there is nothing wrong with the cars performance, it just burns oil.

Question still stands though, is there anything I should be aware of with the 1.6 petrol engine in general ?

I was right, valve stem seals, rocker gasket, cam seal all crumbled when disturbed and rock hard to boot.
New seals now installed after a thorough cleaning, quite a bit of coked valves and combustion chambers.
Tomorrow I'll be cleaning up the block and cylinders, no glazing though, although there's carbon build-up on the top 5mm of the cylinders.
I can also say that this is the first time since the car left the factory that the engine has been touched.

Oh and the Haynes manual, truly is the Haynes book of myth and legend. Virtually nothing in the section on this engine is correct !!!
But not an issue, just made the job a bit longer while I located everything that had to be done/removed.

Still absolutely no complaints though, in Austria cars are very expensive, typically double the price of the UK and Germany, so to get this BX 'advertised for 1000€' which I knocked down to 450€, Parts I've bought are centre silencer, front strut return pipe and clip, spheres, head gasket and bolts, top end gasket set, take the total to 650€. Bearing in mind the next cheapest BX for sale was 3500€ with 350,000 km, no Pickerl (MOT) and a 'bit' of rust.
Still one very happy chappie.

The saga continues...
New valve stem seals, cam seal, head gasket inlet manifold gasket and exhaust gaskets fitted, Bores lightly honed and Valves lightly lapped. Started first turn of the key and enveloped the village in a blanket of smoke for 15 minutes !!! (just how much oil had got through to the exhaust !!!) After that no smoke at all, she's purring (not quite like a Jag, but good for a 4 pot motor).

Now to tackle the exhaust centre silencer, all clamp bolts actually undid without snapping (that's a first for me!) one clamp however would not release, after a bit of judicious persuasion it turned out that that clamp had been welded on the pipe/tin can/filler/putty/jubilee clip. Hmm. Well should not be surprised. Anyways second silencer clamp came off without struggle as did the centre pipe clamp, the centre pipe of course had 'welded' itself to the Stainless cat pipe, out with the angle grinder to cut a careful slot in the centre pipe, a few 'gentle' taps with a lump hammer and out she came. In the cold light of day (actually 10c, unseasonably warm for Austria) what had appeared to be a new pipe was actually rotten as a pear (despite the liberal coating of oil on the inside!) so next the centre silencer which was split, hence why I was doing this job. not problem taking that off except that the moment the pressure was released between the centre silencer and the back box, the back box fell on the floor, completely intact but complete with the rear mount and the part of the boot it's welded too, which in this case was a 4inch plate stuck (I mean stuck, not welded) over the hole where that part of the boot should be. Oh well so much for a totally rust free car. So bumper off, boot carpet and trim out and yes it's a normal BX, both rear boot corners are gone. Out with the grinder and Mig. No plates over holes for me, Cut out the rust, make a cardboard template, cut some steel with a jigsaw and a restoration weld awaits. Then proper rust treatment and she'll be good for another 25 years.(just like my W124 which I have practically re-manufactured over the last 8 years).

Boot floor, corners and exhaust hanger area rusted through is pretty common, welded up many of these, the templates i first made have come in very useful.

Aye, thankfully I have some prior experience with BX's so not overly upset, just that the car was advertised as totally rust free and while one could possibly say well the 80 year old first and previous owner could likely be forgiven for not knowing such things, the fact that 'repairs' on these areas have been made and in such an amateurish way tells me that I was totally justified in beating him down to 450 euros on the price of the car. As I said to the wife, it's still a bargain and I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, I do own a Range Rover P38 after all :P

If you get any more oil smoke I would suggest checking the engine breather. If this vent is blocked it can produce weird results

Welding done, and rust treated, got a little carried away and rust treated everything at the backend of the car underneath, from subframe to bumper mounts. Just awaiting centre pipe, new disks, pads and stone-chip coating to arrive, then I can move to front axle. Still relatively warm here and no snow (normally we'd have 1-3 metres of it by now) so making the most of it as I have to do all of this in the car park (Garage is full of cars and our bar is full of bikes).

Eeesh, all the work completed, went for retest in the snow, (only started today) and she failed on emissions, everything else passed though thankfully. So just ordered a new Lambda sensor, fingers crossed should arrive Monday, then I can dig my way underneath and hopefully that will be it, till the spring when the stonechip goes on. She drives wonderfully but is sluggish. Just a pain in the posterior here as unlike blighty number plates stay with the person and you can't register or insure a vehicle without an MOT (Pickerl) so having to make multiple trips to the Test station to borrow their 'blue' (trade) plates.
The story continues.... and the wife is getting not happy as the Merc won't get up the mountain to her work and the Rangey's still sick.
