GT mediated Awesomeness

Is that the correct isze for a GT then? All the tyre website list 185/60 when I put my reg number in. Can't find the owners manual and gumph, it's in a box in the garage somewhere...

Hi there, just had a look at my owners manual and the fitment for a Gt are 165/70 R 14 MVX with tyre pressures of 29psi front and 32psi rear and 35 psi for speed running, hope this helps. Lesg

Ah thanks Les! Is that the size you have on your GT or have you got 175/65s too? (as seems to be more common) I bet the 70 profile gives a lovely ride, not sure about the grip though when things get slippery.

I reckon that 175/65s are the best size for a GT. 165s would look too skinny IMO. If you have 5J steel rims then 175s would be a good fit as they are right in the middle of the 5J compatible sizes. 175s were fitted to the TDs as well and they still look a touch too thin in my eyes.
But I have always fitted 5.5 or 6J alloys shod with 185s to my many BXs for their grip as well as their slightly chunky appearance.

165/70 MXV is the correct tyre when new but slightly wider tyres will give better grip.

Hi there, yes I have got Michelin Energy tyres all round 165/14s and I find that the ride is ok but I do think that when I change tyres I will go for slightly wider tyres so hopefully to get a less skittish ride on loose surfaces, not that she is a bad car to ride in but I am not too sure how old the tyres are as the car was garaged for over 12 months before I was lucky enough to buy her. I am a little bit on the cautious side when it comes to tyres as I would hate to have a puncture or worse and do damge to the car, anyway sorry for rambling on but hey, get me started on about my Gt and I don't know when to stop. Tyres wise, as stated it's supposed to have 165/70R14. We fitted 175/65R14 to my Dad's GT, based on nothing more than a hunch! It hasn't been at the expense of ride quality as it was the best riding BX I've ever been in.

He shelled out for Michelins, but that's money wasted IMO. I'd be looking here:

The GT has an MOT! Nearly all the work is now done, just a wheel alignment and a recalcitrant temperature gauge to do. Poor Rich has had quite a time with it, new jobs that needed doing kept cropping up - it's a credit to him that he fitted all the work in around his other work, and I get the impression that he's busy generally - extra GT work notwithstanding! Cheers mate.

Getting there with my degree top up miodules, my last exam is 19th May which is only a few weeks away now (shit!!!) then it'll be some furious preparation for the challenge in the two short weeks remaining.

Well done on getting her an mot, mine has just gone through as well, we all know what a minefield they are with our older cars, good luck with the exams and hope to be at next years meet, so there should be 2 Gt's together. Regards, Les

In my experience the Michelin are one of the best for ride comfort grip and feel. The Dunlops I had on one car were very light on steering feel and not as good in the wet, very little warning before letting go. The narrow standard size is as much for economy. Changing our C4 to Goodyears from Avons has given a 4 to 5 mpg better consumption (same size).

Lol, there was another bleu romanitque GT about wasn't there? Im sure I remember seeing three together in a CCC photo from way back when the Ruggs had my GT, maybe 2008 and maybe belonging to an Anthony?

That's the opposite of what I've found. I just don't rate Michelins anymore. The last three cars I've had with them fitted have all understeered in the wet, been noiser on the motorway and all cost a fortune. At the moment, the Dunlops are brilliant in the wet, very quiet and good value. Can't speak for longevity as I've not run them long enough, but they're nearly half the price of the equivalent Michelin, so if they last half the time I can buy another set and I'm still no worse off!
