Which Engine Is This?

Post by Chillmax »

Hi All

Bit of a tight shot, I'm trying to get a wider view, but can anyone tell if this is an 8v or 16v?

Cheers - Justin

I've had a look on Google for 16v engines and they seem to have a decorative plate at the rear of the bay emblazoned with '16v', which this doesn't have, so I guess this isn't, unless that decoration came later and they don't all have?!!?!?!?! ;-)

8v.

That "decoration" as you call it is the camshaft cover on top of the engine.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

Well, for starter's that's a carburettor, so not a 16v.

They look completely different. Google image search BX 16v engine, and then BX 19TRS engine. You'll soon see the (numerous) differences.

That looks like a 1.9 8v carb engine to me, but it could be a 1.6.

Kitch,
its a 1600', the intake is a bit different to 1900's.
Chillmax, there was only one 16V engine in the BX, you over there in UK call them "valver", its a "tuned" 1900', and equiped with Katalysator or none (these without run much better). Like OH COCK Jay said, the sparkplugs cover is coming with the "16V" signature, it was a thing then, back in the 90s.
The Valvers are the most powerful BX, pretty sporty and rare (at least here in Germany). If you don't mind to have a highpowermachine, any 1900' will be fine for you. I don't see any plus from the 1600's towards the lightweight 1400's but they are very common, too. (nearly same poweroutput since they are heavier but the smaller ones are more fuel efficent plus very easy to maintain). Best you can do, i think, is a manual or automatic late 1900' (GT/GTi), they are powerful and fits very well into a BX. Don't underestimate the 1400's for the less extra BX's, a 75bhp engine can handle 900kgs very well, believe me. ;)

Have a nice weekend, greetings from germany

Out of interest did all 1.4 engines have a four speed gearbox?

No. I've had a B-reg with 1.4 suitcase and H-reg with 1.4 TU. Both had 5-speed boxes. Loved them both!

It's a 1989 1.9 TRS Auto, with AC, just bought it today, I'm moving to Ireland next month from the UK & wanted a 30 year+ car for the super cheap tax, but also to be comfortable on the bad roads where I live, so this seemed perfect, it's in great condition too. So my team will be my CX Safari, NIssan Patrol & a BX ;-)

Thanks for that, for some reason I thought the early ones had four speeders - false memory syndrome I guess

Looks like a potentially lovely car you have there, an olympic blue 19TRS auto with A/C! Top BX that. Do you have any other photos?

Olympic Blue is THE best Citroen BX colour in my opinion! My wife called mine Bluey.

True, bleu olympic is just pretty. If mine wasn't red (which i like too), i would think about a paintjob. It looks pretty royal in this blue.
