Can anyone point me at a way of releasing the bonnet safety catch after the plastic pull strap breaks? Having never studied the mechanism when open before, and -as you know- access is restricted, I’m finding it a struggle.

You should be able to grab the catch with a length of stiff wire bent into a hook. On my GT the safety catch hook slips over the plastic part in the second photo. Hopefully it's the same on a Mk 2.
