Yes, it's not as though I hit it very hard, and I selected the rubber tent-peg mallet for a reason. Perhaps the word "tap" rather than "hit" would have been more appropriate. I'm certainly grateful it did work, because it was a bugger driving places in the rain with the window open! And it still works :)

Now I know why he's called Mr. T. (He throws extra 't's in where they're not needed! ) Pity that....

Yeah, I wondered who'd be anal enough to pick that up first

Although in honesty, it was me as I put it up.....I was hoping it wouldn't make me look dumb...sadly it has :(

The difference between a layperson and an engineer... the engineer knows where to hit it , and how hard!

' A hammer is not a tool in electrical engineering',

I can still hear my college tutor uttering these words, some of the many i failed to take on board.
One of the things i love about the BX is they are ideal for novice/wannabe engineers like me, try it, if it breaks a replacment is probably free on here or dirt cheap on ebay or at your local scrapyard.

I know this is the wrong attitude but you'll never get the curiousity out of me & i will always take things apart. as i get older i learn my limits, gearboxes?, best left in one piece, 3 phase electrics?, don't touch.

I've read quite a few 'fixes' on here that you certainly won't find in any manual, & in my opinion this forum & engineering in general is a better place for that.

Thats funny I seem to remember a Mr. Marsh telling me that foil was also not an acceptable thing to use to replace blown fuses with when I did my B-Tec.

3 Phase motors - fantastic, have i had some belts off them in the past.

Mine either gets a tap from my hand, sometimes fires up when starting the car, going over a pothole or a sure guarantee of working is to go over a speedbump.

So i have presumed mine is knacked & hence i have put a bid on the brand new one on e-bay (please dont bid).

.... as I mentioned earlier.... simply needs new brushes. Unlikely you'll ever find any on their own, but being made from soft carbon, you can file down larger brushes to make them fit. Done this many times with 3-phase motor brushes to make them fit in some alternators.

Bit messy though.
