Rear wiper differences?

Post by cavmad »

Had a few BX`s now and one thing that puzzles me is this: some have rear wipers that when you press the button on the dash once will work on an intermittent setting and others have to be pressed everytime you want it to wipe and then only wipe once.
Is this something to do with the switch or the wiper motor itself?

AFAIK the estates have the switch that stays on, and the hatches have the 'push to foot' switch.

I learnt that on here about a month or so ago  Its just the swtich IIRC.

So would it be possible to fit an estate switch to a hatch in order to make it come on intermittently?

never owned an estate, but I have had a BX with a latching switch, really its unnecessary,
over 40 mph no rain lands on the rear glass of a BX hatch.

With an estate switch it would just go constantly unless you fitted the relay.

I swaped the switch over on the BX16TRS Automatic I had when I gave it a GTI interior makeover and it worked.

Cant remember if I changed any relays though sorry.

I`m guessing the realy will be somewhere near the wiper motor inside the boot then?

You would think, but being a BX it'll be behind a side repeater or something

Might be in the fuse box?

Hi!

All BX Serie2 hatchback that were produced until 1987 had the intermitted rear wiper function. Later on this feature disappeared and survived for the estates. The relay for this is somewhere near the upper glove-box (you didnt have this on RHD-BX, i know) so it should be somewhere on the left of the steering wheel.
So just changing the switch doesnt make any sense... You will need the relay with its wires.

Yes, but when you're trying to do a complicated reversing manoeuver in the pouring rain, it would be nice to have an intermittent or constant rear wipe, cos you need both hands on't wheel, not one groping for the damn switch and sending even more water all over the rear screen!

What a grumpy reply MNDE :)
Mind you the BX is not one of the best cars for rearward visibility anyway, especially with the spoiler in the way, but the high bootlid really does not help, compared to things like the ZX rear vis is really rather poor.

Thankyou ;) Just one of those things that irritates me about my BX. Mind you, the old one was even worse: the wiper became sluggish and would often come to a halt in mid-wipe! Even the base model GSA comes with rear intermittent *and* wash/wipe :) Similarly, it's not really needed at speed because of the aerodynamic water-clearing effect.
