BX 16v for sale

Post by csg100 »

Hey guys/gals,

I'm considering selling my 16v I'm spending too much time and money on it, when I really want to spend my spare cash on the Rover.

It's currently got no tax or MoT and it's leaking LHM from somewhere. Doesn't sound too good, I know, but if someone was interested I could get the leak sorted and hopefully get it through an MoT.

I've done a fair bit of work in the last 14 months on it including 2 front wheel bearings, octopus, plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm, coolant temp sensor, oil temp sensor, rocker cover gasket, clutch cable, diesel fan switch, idle control valve, inlet mani gaskets a couple of oil/filter changes plus some general tidying.

I've also put in twin cooling fans (although the second isn't wired in yet), a stainless steel scorpion back box and a K&N filter.

Bodywork is a bit tatty - paint is faded. I'm currently refurbing the bumpers though so hopefully they'll come out ok. Looks ok after a polish though.

Engine runs fine though and it certainly goes and stops well.

Jobs that I know need doing for the MoT:
Fix LHM leak
Fix ABS (light stays on)
Other less important jobs:
Fix speedo (lower cable needs replacing)
Could do with a cambelt change as I have not idea when it was last done(I have one ready to go on). last owner said it had had a top end rebuild, but I have no evidence to support this.
Fit new oil temp sensor (I have one, just waiting for the next oil change)

Here's how she looks:

So would anyone be interested? Not sure what to ask for it really, I suppose it depends on how much work I get done on it. but then again I haven't driven it for 7 months, so fixing it and driving it could make we want to keep it! I'm gonna put it up for sale in a few places and will see what happens.

I'd consider some sort of part ex for something sensible with a bit of power and plenty of MoT. I'm currently looking at a T5 Volvo to give you an example.

Thanks, took me ages to write that!! :)

This is one of the reasons the BX is going:

There's a bit of info floating around on www.overbore.co.uk about that car and what i've been up to with it if you're interested. I've also acquired a Volvo 850 T5 which will be the direct replacement for the BX

Why bother with something with a pushrod engine and a solid badly suspended back axle? - especially as it was inferior to its predecessors.

Sorry - I thought the barely better than Mk 1 Ford Escort spec of these things was one of the nails in the BL coffin when announced. Just old I suppose.

Jags are much better!

Because they look gorgeous, have got a legendary v8 engine, make a great noise, are RWD and the rear axle does it's job suprisingly well. As for being inferior to it's predecessors thats a matter of opinion. And it's got c/l, e/m, e/w, PAS. Higher versions got trip computers, air con, leather, e/s/r etc - bit better spec'd than the mk1 Escort me thinks!

And I don't like older Jags much.

Horses for courses I guess. But thanks for your useful input.

I'd rather have an old P6, in top spec!

Someone's been owned there methinks.

Right, back to more pleasant things, and people: Carl, is that an early series two model? I used to be able to tell the difference but memory is fading fast! Not been on Overbore 'properly' for a while (sorry Kitch  ) but I'm going to now to catch up with the details of your SD1. Nice to see a car like that, always liked them.
Had a Jag by the way (series 3 XJ6 4.2 auto) and loved it but I'd be majorly suprised if the build quality was better than an SD1.
Comparing it to a Mk1 Escort is both ridiculous and futile: a bit like saying a Transit van is as good as a Ferrari because they both run on 16" wheels.

Yeah, it's an early series 2 (1982 X reg) 3500SE. I too have always liked them and this one came up for a good price and I couldn't resist :)

*goes into soft focus mode*

My first car was an '84 SD1 V8 Auto Vanden-plas. Bought for the massive sum of £60. Fantastic great big barge that it was. Felt quite light and easy to drive for such a large car (although did handle surprisingly badly on the limit, but then that's not what a luxobarge is for)

IMO Jags of a similar period (IE designed in the 70's, sold in the 80's) where throwbacks. They still had an engine designed just after the war, an IRS system that was a nasty compromise, an archaic driving position, etc etc. The SD may not have been as technically advanced but at least it was a fresh design with a relatively recent engine, and had a decent high trim spec available.

After all, a Jag and a Rover could never compete properly for the same market share, as they were both bits of the fast-disintegrating BL group.

I also think the SD1 looks bloody fantastic.

*aah nostalgia. It's not what it used to be*

Seconded, plus you can get a nice V8 Sd1 for £1000! :D (not mine I hasten to add) Any 80s Jaguar build quality was as bad as any Rover of the time after owning a 87 XJ40, yes mechanically it wasnt advanced but a very easy motor to work on the V8 is pretty bullet proof if maintained regularly.

Back on topic....

Unfortunately the BX didn't sell. So it's back on for one more try, with a lower reserve.
