Ok, it's only a model, but what would it take to actually make one? I'm sure there's enough savvy in the club to build one in theory..

Some guys in Holland made one once, with a gas axe.
They drove it around a yard, but it was never road legal.
The problem is the BX has a flexible body, even with the roof on, so removing it will make the car very bendy. It needs the box section.
This is a problem with most convertables. The best are designed as such from the beginning, and not saloons with the roof cut off.
A shortened BX with no rear seats (like the model) would be easier to stiffen.
Extra metal along the sills and a girder from a roll over bar to the center of the windscreen top rail would do the trick. (perhaps)
Nice idea. Quite fancy one myself- but an MX5 would be a better choice.

It's doable, I put quite alot of thought into this some time ago (have no life), but as Mike said, the body is rather flexible as is, let alone minus a MAJOR part of the structure.
However, theres plenty of scope for stiffening things up underneath, and within the sills without making it look too untidy I reckon, but the back doors wuold have to go.
Maybe if I get a good spare shell oneday and I'm bored I'll make one and MoT it, just for the hell of it.

Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!
Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Lots of us have doodled it up and there would be only one major problem. As Doc says it is entirely possible to create a base unit to restore the lost strength to the shell. If you did without folding rear seats, a second bulkhead could take a lot of the flexion out but it would need to be a four seater, otherwise it would suffer from Tigra syndrome, becoming too short for its shape. The problem is glass. It would need to be a two door and it would be possible to make new doors and move the B pillars back but unless you cut up a Heuliez Dyana, you won't be able to make a harmonious job of the door glass. Nice idea but the potential cost would make even the most devoted madman buy an MX5 instead.

I hadn't even considered the glass...
That does pose a bit of a problem..
Although I do know a man that can do unbelievable things with glass..
I might actually look into this seriousley.. Since I have no life and fancy another one off project...
And I'm mad (well "mentally tortured" my shrink says, but I think it means the same thing!

Its all a matter of taste I suppose, there is really nothing on the market these days that I can honestly say I love style wise. If they still made the Maestro (and it was bloody rust proofed) I can honestly say I would consider buying one - did what it says on the tin and looked quite nice too. (((((Runs & Hides)))))
