Both do the same thing whatever way you look at it, the engine gets to a certain amount of revolutions per minute and wont go anymore for whatever reason, wheher electrically restricted or by fuel, do we really have to split hairs?

The differences between a governor and a rev limiter are quite marked IMO. The difference is that the governor is working all the time, governing fuel delivery. It just happens to be unable to make the engine rotate any faster than a certain speed, but even at that speed it's still delivering fuel.

A rev limiter on the other hand only does one thing, and it completely cuts the engine at a pre-determined speed.

You can run a petrol engine without a rev limiter, but you can't run a diesel without a governor. If the governor bit in an injection pump breaks, the engine will either not run, or run away at eleventy-billion rpm.

I can't say it has ever occured to me to find out how fast either of my BXs will go. The BX19 might have been up to an indicated 90-100mph but I was more interested in the effortless way it would do 80. The BX14 has a bit of a vibration at anything above an indicated 80; it feels like the wheels need balancing. The 14 feels like it would happily pull past 80 - subjectively it does feel like it could do 100, which I think is what Citroen claimed was the top speed.

If memory serves me correctly the fastest speed I achieved was in my first Honda Prelude, which I think I managed to get to an indicates 140 (130mph true, allowing for speedo error) on a downhill stretch. And no I can't say where or when. I think it would be interesting to drive a BX with similar performance.

It's not about splitting hairs, there massively different concepts and the outcomes ARE different. Trying removing the governer from a diesel and tell me that its the same as removing a rev limiter from a petrol!

I am a generally slow driver, but I have tested the top speed of all my cars, as well as the 0-60 time, just to see if there is anything wrong with the engine s performance or not.

My first car was a Citroen Dyane that I bought for £60. It would do 68 MPH and 0-60 in 29 seconds. It was so rotten and knackered, there was no way any of it was ever going to be any use for another car (Literally). It had a rev limiter called a wrecked engine, which I found out about when the accelerator jammed full on.

The second car was a 2CV6 which was about the same but could top 73 MPH.

The third was a Dyane Cote D'Azure (Now owned by classic2cv of BXCLUB fame), and this little baby could do 87 MPH on most days, all day, and it would out accelerate a 55BHP Renault Kangoo van a mate had

The 4th car was a BX14 St Tropez which ran on to 100MPH dead.

The 5th was a GS 1200 which I am sure would have hit 100MPH, but I only got to 60 MPH as I was being towed by a mate driving my 14 St Tropez (for some insane reason I decided that as I was not actually driving the illegal GS, it must have been OK to be towed along the motorway 70 miles by a BX14  ) It never made the road although I did bump into its new owner at the last CCC meet (not the guy I sold it to).

The 6th was a BX estate 19 TGD from Bernie, which hit 110 MPH when I decided to try and catch up a TZD Turbo Estate that passed me like I was still on the M6.

The 7th was a Mercedes 190 I think. I hated this car, from its solid plastic wheel with knobs on it, to its thirst and beige colour. I think I hit 115 MPH when it was tested.

The 8th was the GT which was just about re-engined by the time the 190's cam chain snapped. That would do 120 MPH for your information Tim
(only once though lol)

The 9th and final car is the CX20. With the same power as the GT in a much heavier shell, it will only top 109MPH, so the BX obviously has better gearing and less wind, tyre and frictional resistance. Still, its better than the claimed 100MPH, and it was verified by a Garmin, on one of those wierd roads in Germany that have no speed limits (I go to Germany a lot of course..)

BX 16Valve 142MPH
BX TD Hybrid 142MPH
The coach, a whopping 85MPH!
The ambulance, dont really know actually, never ragged it, probably no more than 70MPH since I've had it.

I have been faster in various things over the years.
Obviousley all on track / provate roads, speeding on the public highway is just plain silly, and liable to get you nicked. Unless you know the law really well.....

In terms of damage, valvers are designed to rev, they love it.
Diesels will run on the governor for long periods, but obviousley the harder you work ANY mechanical component the quicker it will fail wear out.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Blimey 142 in a diesel :o, did you alter the gearing at all, or was it just the governer? Must have been near to 6000rpm at that speed?

Gearing is indeed modified, as is the governor, it red lines at 5100rpm.

I've had an indicated 119 out of my '92 1.7tzd ............it was "flat out" with nuffin left .....on a deserted dual carriageway where I know there are no speed cameras [A38,between Derby & M1 J28] at 3am in the morning.......although the speedo reads 4mph fast from around 30mph to around 90mph according to my satnav .........so I reckon 115mph is prob'ly more realistic.

Got a whopping 131mph out of the TZD last week, which is the fastest I've ever got out of any XUD engined car. there was more to come, but I get worried being in license losing territory for too long.

RX7 Twin Turbo - 170mph, with ease and then got scared and backed off!

Ohms I think your speedo must be a bit out mate as I doubt the gearing would allow that kind of speed?

Probably isn't very accurate mate, but nevertheless that was what it was saying, was pulling just under 5K at the time if memory serves me. 8)
