1986 19RD Break

Post by toddao »

I spotted it coming back from band practice one night outside the 'garage' of a retired Citroen mechanic. It had been sprayed as an advert by a local spray shop which later went bust.
Thus I became the owner of my first BX and so began my education and introduction to the eccentricities of the car and the members of the BXClub, without whom I wouldn't have managed to keep rolling! :D

Superb. That fog light set up is awesome. Love it! Unique. Well done.

That is a cracking looking car mate.

The front fogs set it off nicely.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

It looks alright but it ain't! I pulled it out of the corner of the barn today where it's been languishing for the last year and gave it a wash.
Since it's been stood the rust has really got going : sills are through to the front floors, front inner wings nicely bubbling, rear section under the bumper collapses under finger pressure.
Also : all pipework needs replacing, front brake issues, rear bearings

Before it was laid up I fitted clutch, re-con injection pump, radiator, heater unit, new exhaust with Cat but it's screaming 'basket case' at me now. I can't weld and I can't afford to pay someone so I might have to break it to keep the TRD going or learn to weld but I know that's not easy.

Such a nice photo. The camera does lie! :D

I have a cunning plan - do you have storage until next summer?

Will explain more on Sunday... :)

yes, it's gone back into the barn to continue rusting in peace! I look forward to your plan, if it involves you doing a non-stop charity weld-a-thon I won't stand in your way! :D Good wine down here too

You're right of course. I don't want to 'go down for a long stretch' for such a crime!
I will preserve the old girl. It started first flick of the key yesterday and though the lack of power steering and the manual windows were a surprise again, it runs well. My wife has also expressed her liking of it. I like it too, just not lying on my back underneath it with rust in my eyes! :D

This is where my break has sat on stands since mid-November. I was hoping to have it finished by January! I've got to move it from this garage by next week as it's blocking access to a sit on lawn mower that will be required by the groundsman who works there.

I should have taken some more pics but unfortunately this is the only one, taken by my wife. She's been really patient considering we don't have a car at the moment, just our huge lumbering Merc bus.
Work done since November:

- Complete re-pipe - hydraulics, everything inc fuel lines, returns.. this was a monster job during the coldest days of winter
- doseur strip and re-build
- Rear arm bearings
- Front wishbone bearings
- lower balljoints
- drop-links
- front brake calipers strip and re-build. New disks & pads.

To do :

- complete tie-rod assemblies. The whole of the front suspension was shot. I've had to replace everything.
- multiple welding areas: both sills, rear box section removal and replacement, front inner wings. I've taught myself to weld recently, using the Merc bus for practice!
- bleed system and re-new LHM.

Hopefully get it running, off its stands by next week then commence the weld-a-thon. Then off to the TÜV, hopefully in the not too distant future..
