Toddman, i love it. perhaps you should direct or script the BXC promo vid! - we can get some footage at the next national and it might be ready in time to do the promo rounds in the lead up to October.

nice work. nice ladies.

Great music and a really good concept for the video. I like it a lot, but I'm sorry to say the camera work lets it down quite badly.

A hand held camera will always make the video look like a dodgy home-made affair. What's needed is a steadycam attachment, or at the very least a much heavier shoulder-mounted camera to give steady images.

... and the continual circling round and round by the camera I find really annoying, but that's just me. Putting in some cuts between a moving camera and a fixed one would give the video a much more "produced" feel. Maybe one circle of the piano... not eleventy!

I think the thread title is quite wrong actually, you are rather quite good Max.
Not at all sure why, but it reminded me of Damien Rice, when he was still good.

Just had another read of what I wrote, and it sounds far more negative than I meant it to! I do like the video a lot, but I think a couple of minor improvements could change it from good to brilliant.

David, no offence taken, I agree.. it makes me dizzy too! And this was an experiment for the cameraman too, he had a semi-steadycam thing but not the full rig. I wanted to see if i could do it for no money and with people helping me out that was what was available. And i aslo liked the idea of it being one continuos un-edited take, but that of course does limit you. However he has now apparently gone and bought himself a full steadycam thing and wants to do another to try it out, so we'll see what happens there.

do you really work at Los Rodeos?

That could make the difference. I expect it will look a lot more professional.

No, not really! It's a reference to the picture that I have as my avatar, which is a photo of PAN-AM B747-121 N736PA, taken by a passenger on KLM B747-206B PH-BUF. These two aircraft were involved in the worst disaster in aviation history. On March 27 1977, they collided on the runway (12L) at Los Rodeos airport, with the loss of 583 lives. Rather than explain it fully, the story is here, from wikipedia.

The picture serves as a reminder to me about the effects of misunderstanding and mis-comminication within the team of people you are working with. It's also a reminder that the smallest decisions and actions can have devestating effects. I'm also rather interested in air accident investigation, so it's a rather relevant picture to have.

 what a disaster, i've vaguely heard about it. nearly 600 people and all those children. Sadly gruesome.

and me! I love the science to it all, how they reconstruct the aircraft and work out exactley what happened is bloody amazing.

Very interesting David. Do you happen to know the story behind the photograph; I assume they recovered the camera from the remains of PH-BUF and manage to salvage the film?

My understanding is that it was indeed found when the wreckage of the KLM aircraft was investigated. As part of the investigation, all film recovered was developed, and this picture was found. It was most likely taken either not long after the two aircraft arrived at Los Rodeos, or just as the KLM aircraft was re-boarding, as the mobile steps are still attached to the PAN-AM aircraft. You can clearly see people from the PAN-AM aircraft on the steps. They are there as the terminal building was over-full of people, and so the passengers on the PAN-AM had to wait on the aircraft.

It's the last image of both aircraft ever to be taken.

Interesting - I also have some interest in this subject - if I'd known you were too David we'd have been up all night discussing it. It was the incorrect decision of the KLM pilot to start rotation without clearance wasn't it? He misunderstood the ATC communication of "OK" for "Ok to roll" when the ATC really meant "OK to wait for next communication"... pretty savage situation and wholly preventable too which makes it worse.

I'm more interested in recurring aircraft faults that caused successive disasters and it took a lot of death before things were modified - it tended to center around my favourite plane the DC-10 and some of the causes of failure were just unacceptable, ridiculous oversight in the design. Is it all about money?

At quite an impressionable age in the late 80s there seemed to be a lot of incidents (there weren't really but memory distorts and I was only 9) firstly the Lockerbie disaster and a few weeks later the often forgotten Kegworth disaster - they were both in the UK and close together and for once it seemed like these things could happen at home too - as a child these incidents always seemed like 'far away' stories. The wintery countryside around the Kegworth reports matched that outside the window at the time . But the most impressionable fact of that incident was that the plane at the time was brand new - instinct told me that old machines were 'more risky' and that a new one should be invincible so it was more shocking to me.

Wonder why so many of us find this an interesting subject.
