Ha ha. Magma is the company I work for. It's a visual arts and graphic design book shop. We use a lot of red in everything, and so the BX became
the "Magma mobile" as it ends up carrying stuff around quite a lot.

I am now the owner of a piece of paper with "MOT" written on it.
After much struggle with emissions it finally got through. I'd be interested in any thoughts
on why the emissions are being a problem though.

Do you do lots of short journeys? also what brand of fuel do you use. Did you take it for a good "italian tune up" before the MOT? She has done LOTS of miles so things do wear and get sooted up.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

Re: Wooscary's TZD 1993
Fairly mixed use really. I do always take it for a spirited run before a test, but then the garage is always surrounded by slow moving traffic, so I end up stuck for a while before I get there. I'll fuel up anywhere to be honest. It is obviously a high mileage car. The turbo has been mentioned at a potential problem previously (the interesting noise it makes), which would be a reason for extra smoke would it not? Hmm.

Re: Wooscary's TZD 1993
excess smoke is a symptom of incomplete / poor combustion - reasons include..
Fuel: too much fuel - pump over adjusted for 'power!' or poor injection spray pattern (i.e. injectors need reconditioning)
Air: Not enough - i.e. dirty air clearer, not enough compression i.e. worn bores, broken rings or valve clearances too wide (last too would lead to poor cold starting too).
Not enough air is generally not a problem on a turbo engine. I'd vote for poor injectors being the most likely cause.

Re: Wooscary's TZD 1993
The XUD really doesn't like to idle before being revved. That's a sure way to get a lot of soot which I reckon will knacker up the emissions. My test station seems to leave cars idling for ages before the emission check. My 2CV gave a horrifically poor reading until I got them to give it a quick Italian tune up before trying again.

Re: Wooscary's TZD 1993
Did a wedding in Portmeirion on Saturday. Great day, great couple, just a lot of running up and down a small hill carrying gear,
and I nearly got swallowed up in quicksand on the beach.
I was driving my mate's (the photographer) car, a 1.1 Saxo. Apart from the tiny pedals, nice enough car. It didn't even mind when we got caught in a sleet storm on the way through Snowdonia!
The BX was supposed to go in for its new rear suspension arm boot and water leak repair this week, but time (and money) has disappeared. Next week perhaps. Off to my Mum's in Yorkshire tomorrow so will see if I can remember how to drive it after my Saxo flirtation!

Re: Wooscary's TZD 1993
The BX is now being very troublesome to start, tapping the starter gets it going, but it is getting harder and harder in the cold.
It is now booked in at my local friendly specialist (who describe Citroen's as "the cars that just keep giving"). New rear suspension boot, fix the coolant leak on the 'stat housing as no matter what I do it won't seal, and potentially a new starter, or whatever they decide is a good idea.
It's a pain because I would happily try and do some if not all of those jobs, but time is just not there, Masters, job, Holly's brother just moved in with us on a temporary basis while he finds a flat etc. Erg.

Re: Wooscary's TZD 1993
Had to have a new starter fitted as a matter of urgency yesterday. Car would not start at all, not enough hands to bump it etc.
My usual garage weren't answering, so just out of curiosity and potentially taking my life in my hands, looked to see where the nearest "good garage scheme" place was. Perfect, just behind the crater that was the BBC building, five minutes away from me.
Gave them a call, and when it became apparent that the car wasn't going to start, they not only fitted me in on a Friday, but sent two chaps round to tow start it and take it back with them. Two hours later I get the call saying all is well, ready for pick up. And a fair bit cheaper than I was imagining.
I'm going to use this place again, they were saying they missed working on BXs as they used to deal with a lot of them.
Now just to get that water leak sorted...

Did I spot you in Leeds city centre last night? Around 18.30 near the Morrisons/McDonalds, I was behind and spotted the BX Club sticker at the last minute.
