I am about to fit my new heater matrix, to those of you who have done this: Is there a gasket between the oblong flange and the water valve?
I will need to get all parts ready before I start.

No gasket, there are flat surfaced rubber rings recessed into area around the two holes in the valve bit. Although it doesn't appear that it will seal, when I reassembled there were no leaks
