Stuck-up TZD

Post by Dominic »

Forgive the repetition - I read about this issue on the forum just a few days ago, and now can't find it... The height control lever in the cabin on my TZD is resolutely stuck in the mid-position. I had a cursory look at the linkages underneath yesterday and they seem free and well-lubed, but the hand lever is stuck solid and I desperately need to change the spheres, so I have to address this asap. Can anyone remind me what the solution was?

You might get some joy by removing the centre console and trying to lube the mechanism there. That's the same option. The linkage underneath needs a bit more care in case the car suddenly drops. I would have thought that with the car safely on stands, undoing the pressure regulator bleed screw would depressurise the system enough for spheres? I'd like confirmation of that before you give it a go...

/\ But the car will drop and pretty damn quickly unless you're able to undo the bleed screw just a tiny amount but I really wouldn't do this unless nothing else works.
I've never had one stick so I don't know if there is a typical cause/remedy but doing as Dolly suggests (remove centre console) is probably your best bet. Also consider underneath of the lever (outside of the car) this could possibly get jammed without lube

That's why I said get the car on stands before you - it would be a pretty sudden depressurisation so it certainly has an element of risk.

the car shouldnt sink that quick by releasing the bleed valve on the regulator,

you will still need to lower the suspension with the height lever,

the usual point they get stuck is the rear pivot linkage which hangs from the rear axle cross member,

the linkage pivots on a bolt thread so becomes stuck quite readily, as said above with the car safely supported, unhook the front to rear height rod then work and lub work and lub work and lub work and lub the linkage at its pivot point till its floppy free/loose, then re/attach the height rod,

they dont/cant usualy get stuck/tight at the point the height lever goes through the floor,

because as it drops through the floor it just pivots on a right angled rod sitting in a nylon block, and the very bottom of the lever is just a pig tail hooked into a loop in the front to rear rod

Without wishing to teach you to suck eggs, the lever needs to be pushed slightly away from you before it actually moves either up or down.
