sphere swapping

Post by rutter123 »

all the spheres on the tzdt daily, are becoming a bit bouncy, can i take the 4 almost new spheres from the currently redundant tgd and fit these onto the tzdt, i know the tgd has a softer ride than the hjgher pressure spheres fitted to the tzd.?

Yes they are interchangeable and will give you a slightly softer ride as you said. I normally fit standard spheres to my cars as I prefer the smoother ride over handling.

How do you tell differant spheres apart? One the questions I have never asked until now :)

Kiwi: pressure, volume, and damping orifice. Or ideally part number

To be pedantic all the front spheres have the same pressure apart from the 16v, which is a lower pressure. The lower the pressure the smaller the spring volume and hence the harder the ride...

Pre '88 spheres will give the softest ride as they progressively decreased the size of the damping hole over the years.

Numbers 9 and 12 will give the softest ride. Front spheres for a TD are number 3; the rear ones aren't listed in that picture.

Well that was fun. Easy they said. Is not when the sodding thing will not seal up. :x First rear, yeah it is easy, even though the units look like could have been the originals. Second one next to the exhaust, LHM can go a long way. A lot of fiddling, a lot of turning ignition and running to watch the pennies drip to the floor. Put the old one back on, no problem. Put the new one on, nope. Put the new one on with old rubber. Works perfectly! What I always say. New stuff tends to be crap. Cannot see a fault on the rubber though. Yet to do fronts as the back and swapping wheels round took up the morning. So I hope the thing remains LHM tight and actually works and is not some East Latvistani paint a knackered one to resell job. Shouldn't be it came from GSF. Leads to question on other thread.
