Front caliper thread stripped, best fix

Post by rutter123 » Sat Jan 17, 2015 10:10 pm

I have a good pair of front calipers which i intend to fit to the t/d soon, as the present ones are binding slightly, i know they are from a low miles car and in good working order but the thread where the flexi screws in has been stripped/cross threaded on the nearside caliper,

Can it be repaired? Tapered thread?

Helicoil on a union thread? Hmmm, not sure on that, though I can't say I know for sure or anything. Normally HC would be the way out, but I would just bin it and get another from somewhere personally.

I've got a couple of brand new right hand side calipers available cheap if that's any help!

i agree its probably not a good idea as this is brakes were talking here,

if you wish to try and reuse this caliper i wouls seek out an engineering company that could bore it outoversized, and make an adapter that the thread on the flexi will screw straight into

Helicoil leaves a stronger than original thread and I have had great success and have a lot of confidence in them however I do agree for the cost of replacement I personally would just fit a new calliper in this case.

It's not the strength of the thread that's the issue as you don't torque it up all that much. It's the boring/machining at the base of the drilling that potentially wouldn't seal properly against the union.
