Have a quick look in the local breakers for a later 405. Many came with aircon, and have a similar (but not identical) roller in the same place.

I think the roller may even be identical, just mounted on a different bracket.

Just a thought, but have you tried fitting an old timing belt tensioner?
I know it's slightly smaller in diameter, but serpentine belts are easy to get in different sizes and all you need to then do is measure with a piece of string through the same track and order by length and number of V's in it (ie 5T1225 = 5 tooth X 1225mm length)
The only difference I can see between the serpentine tensioner and the cambelt is that one's plastic, the other stainless and as CXs always had metal tensioners I can't see it being a problem.
FWIW, I have seen these kinds of things done here by the young fellows when they do certain mods, so it's not all that uncommon.

The timing belt tensioner is a way to go if I can't find the correct bit. I've one off an XUD and one hole lines up on the sump, I'll have to to do a spot of welding to make the other 2 fit but it can be done.

Mr B i will take some tools and have a look when i get chance how easy are they to get at or does the car need lifting so i can get at underneath

Depends if said 4x4 is resting on the ground in low. The plastic splash shield behind the suspension strut needs to come off, then the tensioner will be dead ahead, below the crank pulley. 2 x 13m/m nuts and a 13m/m bolt undone and clunk, on the floor!

thats spot on just the info i needed i will try and get this weekend and fetch it the breakers have said £10 if its any good, rung them first thing they are nice people. if i can i may come out and pay for a £2 item and put the tensioner in my pocket but got to be carefull they have CCTV

Mr B, if Sleepy`s plans fail we (Ian and I) have a spare 4x4 up here in Sunny Chester. Not sure whether it`s aircon or not but I`m sure Ian would know?
