Diesel Air inlet pipe?

Post by Alastair »

Does anyone happen to know the function of the cardboard foam pipe that lets air into the air filter box on some diesels ( mines a 1700)? The one I have is past best to say the least... Are they still available or shall I take it off and throw away?

It funnels cold air into the engine, from the inner wing which the colder the air the fender it is and will give a better burn. I would try a and keep it in place of you can.

It's just mines falling apart and I was wondering how critical it was noting it has foam inside and the odd hole here and there......so I could substitute it for something else ?

If it's the one that runs from the wing to the air filter, it's not a problem, but if it runs from the air filter to engine you need to replace it.
They think it's all over, it is now!

If you remove the paper pipe with foam inside, the suction noise will be definitely louder. There are small holes on that paper pipe, to have (or eliminate?) the air-spring effect in the pipe.
I had a plastic pipe without foam and holes, and as I have changed to the factory version, the noise reduced. No other benefits I realized.

Out of a matter of interest are the factory ones still available and if so any idea on price?
