For a Mk2, am I right in thinking that access to the bulbs is by removing the control knobs?
I've tried pulling them off - even with some padded pliers - but they all seem solidly attached.
Any advice appreciated.

If they are like this they pull off but they can be firm.

Prefer it to the Lamborghini, like Signor Gandini!

Re: Heater control panel illumination
Try using your hands first, but you may indeed need pliers and a cloth
You then need to remove the vents, and prize the clips out too, its fiddly but not difficult
Plenty of how tos on here

Thanks, Tim. I did find the earlier post (about blower control), with its helpful photos and tips.

Re: Heater control panel illumination
Success. Piece of gaffer-tape on the knobs to protect them, and a sharp tug with the pliers.
Some very dry spring clips in the knobs, likely never disturbed. Have silicone greased each one.
Both bulbs blown, and replaced.
Some lubricating contact cleaner for the fan track.
Looking forward to being able to see the controls at night!
